SoCal, you near DSM? Shoot me a PM, as I've got an office I need to train on 07, and I'm tired of showing everyone how to wipe their ass.

I've been pretty employable in my field (pharmacy, healthcare), but I am retiring from the Navy in 11 months and am looking for a position I can slide into. As men, aren't we always looking for a "position" we can "slide into"? On a side note, if you or anyone needs help or training on Excel/Access/Word/PPT/Visio - or a formula etc. let me know. I paid a few hundred bucks a while back to get certified as a MS Office Expert & Trainer. I gotz me some mad formula/pivot/macro/module skillz. Fuck pivot tables.

Dug....keep your chin up. I just went through a similar experience a couple of years ago. You'll find your place and once your on the inside, all will be much easier. As difficult as it can be, don't get discouraged. Keep confident in your skills and abilities and you'll land something. You've got the entire Wasteland rooting for your success. Ron, I want to work for your company. Get me a job there.

But I could be enticed to make a road trip. Unfortunately, I've found that ass wiping is a necessary evil for a whole lot of people. So I've tended to create elaborate macros and/or huge formulas to dumb things down for the majority of those folks.

So I was offered the job today. I'm still not sure if I will accept or not. It is with AFLAC in Business to Business sales, selling supplementary insurance, I can sell to individuals too. I'm leaning pretty strongly to taking it as where I am now isn't going to go anywhere and is only a temp job. The money isn't very good as I am making enough cover bills and that is it. There will be no christmas this year. This job is 100% commission, and that scares me, but I really can't do any worse money wise than I am right now. I know I'll be my own boss, so I'll have to keep working hard even though no one will be looking over my shoulder. I know it will be a lot of hard work, but that doesn't bother me. I welcome the challenge after the shitty last year on the job front.
There are a lot of smart folks on here, some I'm sure have worked in sales before, probably even insurance. Any advice? I'd love to hear it, no matter what it is, positive or negative.

If you know your stuff & remain confident (lose this "most discouraged" costume) - you may do all right until you find something more to your liking.
Even though we had such an Aflac presentation at my workplace a month ago, I'm not aware of what the B2B market is for Aflac products. I avoided the sales pitch & signed the sheet saying I'm not interested.
While I'm not sure of the "COBRA-bility" of the Aflac programs, if it is separate from the standard health insurance rules, you might use this as a selling point... if you lose your job, you pay X/mo for the catastrophic Aflac coverage vs. the $1600/mo. for the standard insurance COBRA.
However, I must say that the last commission sales job I had was with Best Buy for the 1991 holidays... where I had the ignoble task of filling out CPO's with my employee number on them as fast as I could so the long lines of people could buy one of two JVC VHS-C camcorder models that had spiffs for $40 or $55... when combined with the commission it was about $80 each for 15 seconds of work. ---so today's market & your situation aren't exactly relevant matches.

Dug,
Do your homework. Like SoCal said I am not aware of B2B Aflac sales. What exactly will you be selling? Employee Benefit packages? My wife has an AFLAC policy that we are using as a replacement to short term disability for when she gets pregnant but other then that I am not to familiar with their product line and in fact that is about the only thing I have heard that anybody has with them.
I would ask to talk to a current rep to see what you will be doing on a day to day basis, Find out if you have a set territory or if it's a free for all with any rep that sells AFLAC.
100% commission can be great but it can also be pretty shitty if you don't hit the ground running. Most Insurance reps don't last more then a couple of years once they sell to all of their friends, families and business relationships the well tends to dry up.
One last thing, Are you responsible for cold calling businesses or do they have some sort of lead program?
And don't buy the you can make X amount of $.
Good luck and if you have any other questions just ask.

This shit is getting funny now.
Just to catch you all up. I rescheduled the interview that was canceled the day I started this thread. I got a second interview and eventually was offered the job, which I ultimately declined. I, and my GF, decided that this, though probably better than my current job, just wasn't what I was looking for and involved a little bit too much risk than we were able to take on at the moment.
Fast forward to today. I am on the way to a pre-screening test with the City of Cedar Rapids and my GF calls and tells me to turn around and head back home, the power is out at city hall in CR (incidentally my GF may just work in HR for the C of CR). How funny is that?
BTW, you may disregard the post that started this thread I was simply venting and pissed off and depressed with the situation.

So Dug, have you been working on those abs? We want washboards by March! Uh, not quite. I have however dropped 25-30 pounds in the last year and am below 200 lbs. for the first time since I can remember. I am still fat though, and the 6 pack is still very well insulated.
