I understand where you're at in life. Really I do.
I was 31...living in my hometown of Hampton, doing the pharmacist thing. I had it all...nice house, little cocoon of my home town, etc. But I was bored as shit, professionally un-challenged, and finally figured out I didn't want to be doing that for the next 25 years.
So I took a chance and got my commission in the Navy. Wasn't an easy decision for a number of reasons: Had to move away from my dad and mom; people poo-poo'ed it; was a great deal of unknown out there.
But, since then, have traveled the world, earned two masters, seen places I only read about in books, met a ton of new friends, life-long, educated friends, and actually got back to Iowa more than I thought. I also grew personally and professionally well beyond what I had hoped.
And now at 51, I am moving back to Iowa again.
Did I miss a few home games in Kinnick? Yes. But would I do it again. Heck yes I would...in a minute. As the others has stated, you can always move back.
The travesty would be not to take a chance at something better, expanding your horizons, and then spend the rest of your life thinking "what if."
That almost happened to me. Thank goodness it didn't.

I agree with everything said above and would like to add that in the internet age its not hard to stay connected with people back here. Shit, just throught the Xbox Live medium you will be able to chill after work with the majority of us. You know that I will purchase any game worth playing to play with you. You can work that facebook thing or the twitter contraption to stay caught up on what everyone is doing.
Hawkeye football is going continue to dominate and will be shown more nationally and the BTN will carry the rest of the games.

Well, I'm still waiting on a reply from them. The fact that I haven't recieved anything saying I've been taken out of consideration makes me think I'm still in the running for the job. The crappy thing is that I have to let the guy who I gave a $400 rental deposit to know that I might not be living there. I'm not really wanting to do that though because I like the place and I still have no idea whether or not this job will be offered.
If they offer it to me I will be taking the job, I agree that I'd always have that "what if" thought if I don't. If I don't get it I'll be a little bummed but for the umpteeth time I have a lot of good things going on and come next spring I'd be on a month to month lease at this new place so I could relocate then with about $10k in the bank opposed to $3k I'll have saved up right now.
Ahhh, the waiting game.

Well, nothing has been discussed yet. . . period. Also, before the HR woman set up the interview she made a disclaimer that moving costs wouldn't be included. I'll just have to wait and see if they offer and how much. The posting said 48,000 to 60,000 which is a pretty huge range. If the lowball me for 48,000 I would be making pretty much the same amount of money. If that's the case I wouldn't be any better off financially and have to put more hours in at a presumably more stressful job. Also the cost of living there is higher. I might be better off staying, saving up about $10,000 over the next year then relocating, that is still a strong option whether I get this job or not.

The next stage, as you said, is the waiting game. Sometimes they make 2nd contact within a week...other times it'll be weeks. I've had places tell me NO WAY regarding moving expenses. But you know what....HR is there to protect the firm and it's all part of their initial package, which, as you said, they'll probably low ball you. So my advice, garnered through experience the previous 4 months: 1. Never throw out a dollar figure first. If you low ball it, they'll accept it and you'll under value yourself. If you high ball it, they always have another candidate in mind and they'll offer somebody else with a lower offer. 2. If pressed, give a range which is "market acceptable." Knowing what that range is good on ya. 3. As stated, I had the VA tell me NO WAY for moving expenses...well...I knew better and when we negotiated starting salary, vacation acruel and moving expenses, I tossed in $10K for moving expenses. At that point, they wanted me bad (so my new boss tells me), so they said OK. They found a way....they always do. Moving to Iowa City from Sterling is only 120 miles. But the lowest rate I could negotitate was with Allied @ $2200. So, it's going to be probably twice that to get you out to the west coast. To expect you to pay for that is rediculous....they should offer and pay it.

$4200 is what cost me to use Mayflower moving from Cali to Iowa in 2007.

Well, thankfully the furniture that I have I am planning on getting rid of even if I stay here in Iowa. I've been sleeping and sitting on the same couch for about 18 years and my bed is getting old too. The only things I would take if I have to move myself would be my clothes and my electronic things. Still, that would mean I'd have to buy furniture and a new bed after I get there, plus put down a deposit and a month of rent. I could pay for the relocating with about $2000 (gas, deposit, rent, etc.) then I'd have to look into getting a bed and a couch which would run another few hundred bucks minimum. Now are you starting to see why I don't really give a shit if I don't get the offer.
Hoffa, I think you bring up a good point. My feeling right now is that while I am a candidate I don't really believe I am a leading candidate and given the job market there are probably some people living out there looking for a job that might have better credentials. I'm still going to wait and keep the options open but if I don't hear anything by the middle of next week I'm going to make plans to stay here since I'm moving out of my current location at the end of the month. Other opportunities will come up if this one falls through. Honestly, I'm growing tired of having it weigh so heavily on my mind.

I'm sure there are people with better credentials that applied for the job but who the fuck cares. In fact I can almost guarantee that guy/girl whoever they are doesn't get the job. A position like this because of the salary will get a wide range of people to apply, some with not enough experience and some with too much. Sure they want somebody that will have a clue what to expect going in and their previous job wasn't at Taco Bell but they also want somebody they can see getting promoted and growing with the company. Again don't know the facts but there are a ton of things more important to employers right now then experience.

The Pacific Northwest is the balls. Everyone should live there for a least a little bit. I drove through Oregon and it was beautiful. Seattle was an awesome place to live.

I finally got an update on this job. I guess I'm still being considered and they will let me know "more" by the end of August.
It seems kind of crazy to me that this was dominating my train of thought just couple/few weeks ago. Right now I'm not going to be able to take it because I'm moving into a new place with a six month lease this weekend and because of my blossoming relationship with this awesome girl.
I'm not about to tell them that though, I still want to know if they would have offered me the job.
