5 years plus combined time on a seagoing vessel with 2 operating nuclear reactors. Nothing substantial ever happened related to the plant. 22 years in the service, nothing substantial happened to the fleet. Yeah its the DOE monitoring and literally one of the stupidest people in politics is in charge. Still wouldn't mind. Of all the substantial energy sources we have it has the safest track record in this country, hands down. Coal is far more environmentally damaging, natural gas production causes massive amounts of earthquakes and contaminated water sources, coal plant waste destroys rivers on a semi regular basis. If we would simply get the new plants on line it could easily handle the majority of our energy needs. And Yucca mountain needs to happen. Got news for you, the govt has been moving military cores through your backyards since the 60's and you haven't noticed yet. Weapons production from nuclear however has completely screwed up a few places. No argument on that aspect. Did you serve on a carrier or in a sub? Anyway, I absolutely agree with you. 100%. The fear that a lot of people have, and I think it is credible, is what happens in an accident. The probability is absolutely very, very low. However, things can happen as we saw most recently with Fukushima. And when shit hits the fan, it is very, very, very bad. And the problem is that when shit hits the fan, the only thing you can really count on is that the companies involved will all lie like hell and the government will lie like hell. Because they all know that by the time the impact from the contamination is felt, they ain't gonna be around to deal with the consequences of it. Is the fear of the unknown. People cannot see (or understand) radioactive decay and can be easily manipulated into believing it is teh evil. All while dismissing the idiots "rolling coal" around them and their kids because they didn't instantly die.

I used to love pulling up beside militant bicycle activist pedaling in a full lane on a rural 2 lane highway dropping the hammer and leaving them in a swirling black cloud of my disapproval.

Look you Lance Armstrong decipel, you are not a car, you are not entitled to a full lane of the highway. Get over on the shoulder where you belong.

No ditch, either. Tons of bikers, but there are enough stories of middle aged guys dying on their bikes that they are insanely careful and try to ride mostly on the trail system.

I wish Iowa cyclists would hear these stories..... I get it. They deserve a place to ride and shit. Just don't ride in a manner that interferes with traffic weighing several thousand pounds more than a bike. If you're backing up semis going up hills on state highways, you should get ticked for attempted suicide.

When I ride my bike it's a vehicle and I have every right to that lane. I do my best to make me visible with my fancy spandex nut hugger biking outfit that has bright colors and a shiny aerodynamic helmet. If I can be charged with a DUI on it, I have all rights to those roads.

Given the sheer number of people driving while texting, under the influence of pills or who are just plain bad drivers, the laws of man are absolutely meaningless when you are on a bicycle on a highway or fast moving road. It only takes one 17 year old dipshit facebook livestreaming or one 78 year old with early onset glaucoma who should not be driving to splatter the ever living fuck out of you.

Get a rolling coal small dick Napoleon Bagelparte coming up behind me gives me more than enough reason to not ride a bike. I can't count the number of times that I've seen self important douches driving down a bike lane because they are too important to get stuck in traffic.

There's a saying here that fits........ Ride your bike that you don't register or pay gasoline tax on, on highways, just do yourself a favor and ride for your life. It's not right to interrupt commerce and act like you're in the right when people take notice. You can't call out shit drivers that inconvenience you, while you yourself are in a vehicle, which is road rage, then play fuckin reborn earth child activist the minute you touch pedals again. Every cyclist I know fits that dynamic. Complete, and also average or normal to be fair, aggressive driver while in vehicle; then poof, pacifist victim snowflake on their bicycle, that thinks all automobiles are the devil, until they load it up and drive back home in their internal combustion powered machine. I remember an argument on the stupid fuckin des Moines register forums. This "cyclist" was so mad people were mad at cyclists. Folks asked what his concerns were. He shared that he's sick and tired of cars getting aggravated that get backed up behind him.... some motioned he should consider getting off the road for a while, to let the line pass by. Others told him to fuck off and die. You know typical message board justice. The one takeaway I had was him, at the concern of others, telling everyone that the next time someone gets mad at him he's going to really disrupt traffic. What does tilt mean? Gonna try and bluff those stupid truckers who deliver your instant quinoa to whole foods off the road with your fuckin awesome schwinn? You're on a fuckin bike. Act like it. Obviously there are far more shit drivers on highways than there are cyclists. You accept the risk of getting killed by these people, who are typically just like your stupid ass, every time you saddle up.......

Also cosign on the laws of physics. They always win. No matter what. You can survive Ebola. You can't survive strong doses of ionizing radiation. You can survive falling off a bike after running over a beer can. You can't defeat the kinetic energy of a peterbilt driving 57 mph hauling 80k pounds, on a huffy.

One time years ago I was doing a search on the web for a motorcycle crash and instead wound up down a rabbit hole of gory photos. There was one that was just so crazy I couldn’t stop looking at it and was trying to decide it it was real but it was. It was in a downtown area somewhere and there was a large truck, maybe dump or cement, can’t remember now but behind it was what was left of a body and apparent bicycle. The bicycle was more easily distinguishable. The body was quite flattened except for the helmeted head and some lower legs and feet. Obviously the photo was taken right after the accident as there was no tenting, caution tape or police on scene. I just wouldn’t ride a bike on anything but a bike trail. I remember riding my bike in the street in Des Moines as a kid as that’s what we were taught to do; stay off the sidewalk, ya know, but it was still very scary. I think In general, peoples driving habits are a lot worse than they were 30 years ago.

4 carrier tours (Stennis, Nimitz, Reaganx2) and a nuclear cruiser (Mississippi). Won't disagree that the impact is large, but shit, take the cumulative total of any power production source and tell me exactly which ones we use that don't have a huge negative impact. Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and Cedar Falls all fall within 50 miles or so of Palo, Iowa. That plant has been in operation for nearly 45 years. Most people aren't even aware it exists.
