Would you say Dubuque and East Dubuque cancel each other out on the "shitty places on US 20" scale? Dubuque is just a nicer town every time I go there, but East Dubuque falls in with the lowest of the low. Or would you say Galena equals out East Dubuque? Or does Galena need to stay free to balance out Rockford? Or South Bend, or Michigan City, or Toledo, or downtown fucking Cleveland... You raise valid points. I'm just saying that on paper, 30 is a touch worse than 20. Just a touch. Jersey and the jaunt into West Virginia make it happen. Say what you will about South Bend, East Dubuque or Rockford, but you know what? None of those places are in New Jersey or West Virginia. Hey, I'm a busy guy, but you raise a legit issue, and I spent a good 30 minutes of my Friday researching the route of both highways, and I conclude that 30 is worse. However, in my estimation, Clinton and Marshalltown are what tips the scales. 30 only goes through liek 5 miles of West Virginia, and also goes through the nicest parts of Philly. However, ending in Atlantic Shitty is hard to ignore as well.

You haven't truly traveled Iowa "poor" and/or "sh!tty" until you've traversed the state on either highway #2 or #34.
Depressing.

However, Burlington is an even bigger shit hole than I imagined, and the worst town I came across is Wapello, which has, perhaps, the most ridiculous restaurant I have ever seen, in the 61 Roadside Diner, which I later learned from a Wapello native, that the shitty restaurant is actually a converted baitshop. So I found this place on Google Streetview. When we drove by at 12:30, this lot was full for the lunch crowd. And thus, I nominate Wapello for the shittiest town in Iowa. link

There are probably a lot of US highways that can compete for the crown. There has to be one down south that makes 30 look good.

I mean, look at US 84, and tell me you could drive that without getting so depressed to drove into a concrete pillar just to numb the pain.

The most depressing aspect about 20 and 30 is that even the places that we consider shitbag towns today all had their day in the sun at some point. The brightness of that sun varied, but a town liek Fort Dodge, Marshalltown, Mansfield, etc., when locked off from the outside world in the pre-interweb/post WWII days prolly wasn't that bad of a place. They were all growing and had prospects. But in talking to mah colleague, he made Mansfield sound liek a fucking clone of Fort Dodge in terms of industry drying up and smart people all getting the fuck out - they even just got a new prison and working there is liek the dream of everyone. I mean, for fucks sake, Rockford, Camden, Erie and Gary were industrial powerhouse towns 40 years ago and now they are just pure shit. But at least when you go through them, you get a glimpse of a bygone era when Japanese and German factories were all bombed out and China was closed to the outside world, making those factories King Shit. But I think the shit you would see on Route 84 is just all pure shit, very little of it ever had a place in the US economy and I'll bet the cityscapes in those places tell the same story. Good find with 84.

Highway 34 goes through Downers Grove, IL, therefore it is a baller highway. That offsets Ottumwa, Burlington, and Galesburg. It's Ogden Avenue, no0b. It also passes through many other fine, wealthy DuPage county towns. And FTW, it passes through Sandwich. What's not to like 'bout Sandrich?? Correct, sir. It is Ogden Ave. I've taken the 34/Ogden exit to visit mah buddy out in Naperville or Lisle numerous times. A world away from where 30 passes through Joliet or Asswego. Not even close.

Carter Lake. If I had my way the road to Fly Out of Nebraska would be a pay road.

Good find with 84. While most shitbag towns in the midwest had their hayday in the gilded age post war, the shitbag towns in the south had their prime in the Antebellum south in the 1840s during the expansion of agriculture in the fucking Polk administration. Fart Dodge has been on the decline for 30 years, but Asslick Louisiana had been on the decline for 150 years.

I can't wait till he gets to BondU. Why would a boomtown like that be considered "forgotten"? In the description: "There are 947 towns in Iowa. I'm going to take pictures of every single one." its a town. In Iowa. sometimes I wonder about you....
