This shit is terrifying. I can't even talk to my wife about this - she's doing the Wisconsin marathon next month and the Chicago marathon in the fall.
Fucking ball bearings to take out peoples legs...just sickening. When my wife runs, I'm at the finish line. Even though I'm not a runner, it's such an incredibly uplifting experience to see these people accomplish this feat. There's tears, hugs, smiles, celebration. To go from that to a scene of terror is just...sickening.

Why do humans do this sort of thing to each other?

Would not be surprised to learn this is more of a domestic act, such as Timmy McVeigh committed in Oklahoma City, as opposed to foreign-born terrorists. Although it doesn't fit the pattern that most acts committed by white supremacist types or anti-government groups are against government or government agents, not random citizens.
Guess we'll see...

Why do humans do this sort of thing to each other? As I was sorting through Twitter last night, I saw thread after thread of young people pretty much expressing disgust for humanity. However, the most striking thing to me, after watching the video, is after the first bomb went off, hundreds of people ran INTO danger. They didn't know if there were more bombs, they didn't know if they were next, they just saw people in need, and ran to their aid. A small group of people, if not one, perpetrated this evil, but keep in mind, hundreds risked their lives to help. That tells me more about humanity than anything else. I see Patton Oswald said something very similar. Ratatouille knows his shit.

Edit: I typed this in response to Tweets.
Does it really matter though? It happened. Again. There is almost a pattern now. Most of the US population has grown numb to these acts, as evidenced by how quickly the furor over Aurora and Newtown died down, and how little (nothing, really) was changed in the wake. This story too will die down more quickly than it should, and nothing will change, and then it will happen again. And again. And again. People will continue to play the scapegoat and blame game, point fingers everywhere but in the mirror, and loudly bluster about "getting them!" and other bullshit manufactured--and frequently bigoted--responses. But nothing will change, because Americans are stupid, lazy, and nearly intolerant to change and sacrifice. We just want to have mountains of useless stuff and expensive shiny objects so we can feel superior to those who don't have as much useless stuff or as many expensive shiny objects. And the derp goes on.

Wherever big crowds congregate, there is a risk for shit like this going down. It happens all over the world. Sure, I guess you could change something so that your BFF from TSA can search every fucking bag that ever enters an open roadway. Bag sizes at Kinnick will get reduced again. And they'll have more people patting down coats and checking purses and shit so lines to get in will get longer and it will become more difficult to sneak in a bottle of hooch. Shit will change, assknob, as the government's presumption that you're doing something wrong will grow and your freedom and privacy will shrink. You're just pissed because the anti-freedom agenda that will come from this isn't being diverted to your pet cause of the day.

What happens is they'll use one method and then there is a response that makes that method impossible in the future. For instance, when that nut blew up the truck in the basement of the WTC, it got real hard to get a truck anywhere near the base of the building. So they flew planes into it. Marathons will now establish perimeters around heavily crowded areas and all bags will go through a bag search.

I actually agree with everyone here.
First of all OK4P is correct, the idea that you can secure an event with hundreds of thousands of people is laughable. This could happen everyday in our country with no recourse, because unless you want magnetometers on every street corner, you can't stop the lone wolf.
Secondly, Ghost is most certainly correct. The thing that was in my mind yesterday was asking myself whether I'd be running away or to the site if I were there. I'm not an overly brave soul, but I think when situations like this arise, the gut instinctual reaction is to help. I hope I would be that brave.
Thirdly, Charles is correct. A friend of mine put something on facebook yesterday that said, music is a reflection of society. If you want music (in this case offensive hip hop) to change, you can't change the music, you have to change society.

I disagree, this looks like foreign born terrrorism to me but I'd have expected someone to have taken credit for it by now. I don't see any particular message in this bombing other than 'Fuck America'.

Perhaps the curious, what-the-fuck-happened-here side of my old brain got the best of me in that post, but, yeah, you can't help but be curious about who did this and why. At least I can't. You are correct, so far no overseas terrorist group has taken credit for it which is usually their MO. And if it truly was gunpowder that was involved, as people who smelled the aftermath said, that may suggest more of a domestic hate act than something hatched overseas. It could well be the work of a lone wolf, with or without foreign connections, who simply hated 'Merica. Irregardless, to quote OK4P, it was evil.

When will you become bored with your attempts to depict me as something I am not?

You act as if we can MAKE ppl become nicer, better....etc. I don't want any more violence either, but some ppl are always going to be fucked up in the head. You aren't ever going to change that. It happens everywhere, and it has happened for eternity. The only thing that has changed is the population, in that it lends itself to give us more crazies in this world. People are genuinely good and want to help and don't want to hurt - do not over-generalize the entire US (or world) because of the actions of a few. If you see good things happen for an entire month and then one bad thing - you immediately forget the good things and focus on the bad one. It's what people do.

I'm just brain barfing. I am expressing my wishes and hopes that humanity will somehow, some way, turn it around, in my lifetime. That's all I'm doing. It's a fantasy, and I know that, but I'm an eternal optimist, so I will always hope. Insinuating that I want "the gov't" to drive something is fucking absurd. It's an amateurish, zero-quality troll.

You should write commercials for insurance companies about people holding doors and picking up someone else's loaf of bread when it falls out of their grocery bag and sharing their umbrellas when it rains and stuff. Humans are nothing more than animals with slightly more sophisticated brains and when confronted with resource scarcity or a threat, they will respond with violence. Your little 20 year old girl diatribes won't change that or the fact that human history is pretty much just violence in furtherance of resource exploitation. Oh, but you're so fucking different than those other animals, with your big energy sucking house, your Samsung smartphone made by 90 cent an hour Chinese labor and your career selling refined petrochemicals. Look guy, go and watch Team America again, specifically the speech about dicks, pussies and assholes. You just think everyone can turn into a pussy, well they fucking can't. There will always be assholes. Hopefully there are always enough dicks to plug them up to keep them from shitting all over everything, but it just takes a handful of assholes shitting on pussies and you've got a year's worth of news events to prove that out of 7 billion people on the planet there are still assholes. "I just want everyone to be a pussy, wah wah wah." Fuck you, Chuck, there will always be assholes.

Well until I read your 2nd piece, I thought roughly the same thing as OK4P - remember, however, that I have never been to the political board (nor want to) so I don't really know your views. Only on a broad scope do I sorta know what you believe. But yes, I have the same mentality. I read a tweet that in Iraq there were like 30 separate bombings yesterday or something to that effect. The US is a really good country that has a few people that are extremely crazy. Throw in the radical racists, Westboro fucks, ppl like that, and there are a few more. But most work 8-5 jobs trying to live a happy life with the ppl they want to be around. I live my life not caring about much except the next day and the ppl that care about me, and just being exceptionally nice to everyone else, and it's worked pretty well so far.
