Cubbies sign Lester. 31 yr old pitcher signing 6 year deal. Best season on FA year.
Who is the GM for the Cubs again?

So the Cubs will still suck ass; they'll just pay a lot more to do it.

I don't like contracts that long, especially for pitchers. However, the Cubs feel they are getting close. I am hoping for 85 or so wins this year and then hopefully the playoffs after that. There's no question this contract will not look as good in the last 3 years or so. But, if Lester can help them over the hump, then it is money well spent.

I just would have never done it this year with that team. They have a lot of those guys locked up for a while, so let it ride for a year or try to trade one of the 14 SS they have for a few young arms. I just don't think the youth on that team is ready to go to the playoffs in year one. So why waste a huge contract on an aging player? Unless, of course, they are going to do the same thing next year.

The Cubs have the #1 farm system in baseball so they not only have the money to overpay for an Ace but also have plenty of talent that teams would want to trade for proven major league talent. Giving that money to Lester isn't a huge deal as Ricketts is the guy writing the check not the Cubs farm system. The next two years for the Cubs are the most important as when and if they trade some of their young guys is where they really need to make sure they aren't making the wrong decisions.

Science fiction is only entertaining when it's somewhat believable. That might be some of the worst acting I've ever seen.
