Hokks have only retired nine jersey numbers in hoop, as far as I can tell. www.hawkeyesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/stats/072904aaa.htmlI love me some Roy, we were peers at UI and he was a key contributor to a special era in Hokk hoop, but I have to agree with Ghosto on this one. Not sure his number should be retired; it seems like the cry to do so is based solely in the fact that he's sick and probably dying. It's the "Iowa Nice" thing to do, but it conveniently overlooks his drug use/rehab while a member of the team and over the pursuant years. Although it can be argued that #40 (Street) was retired because he got killed, so there is precedent. I hear you, I love me some Roy as well. His drug/alcohol abuse is just part of the bigger picture and the only thing Iowa "fans" have heard or know about because it has been out there. I am not here to spread rumors but let's just say for a pretty good stretch of time he wasn't looked upon in CR in a very good light in the business community. I will leave it at that. And that isn't even taking into account that he pretty much had no relationship with Dev until he started to get looks from colleges to play basketball. But you are right nobody takes a look at all of the off the court stuff and sad to say that does play a part. |

Still, there is no shortage of evidence that Roy Sr. was kind of a bag most of his life. In comparison to say, Ronnie Lester, who might be the only comparable guy in terms of talent and impact at Iowa, Lester had a decent NBA career, and then has had a great front office NBA gig since then. Roy, on the otter hand, got suspended for drugs as a rookie, crashed out of the league, kind of bummed around for 20 years, getting arrested here and there. Lester's number was retired his last home game. Roy's hasn't been retired 25 years later. |

That's mind-numbingly stupid. I mean, it's almost incomprehensible how retarded that is. Him and his kid made you a lot of money? I did not know that Roy Sr. didn't graduate. That's no small part of this. Personally, I don't think his number should be retired, but I wouldn't be offended if it were. miliar's "perspective" (if you can call it that) is typical tavernhokk, just liek veanderps and so many others who post srsly on srs website. They don't see the University for what it really is, and how it's Charter defines it. They see it as a for-profit sports/entertainment organization first, not as an educational institution first. They are too shallow to be able to separate the AD from the scholastic whole. "Durrr the University only exists because the football and basketball programs support it! Hurrr if not for sports, there would be no UI!" Speaking of making money for the university, how about giving back? Ronnie Lester donated $100,000 to the Carver renovations about 5 years back. He asked that they name the training room after the guy who was head trainer when he played. |

College of LIEberal Arts and also the general fund. Not one penny to GarBar's piggy bank tho. How about donating some of that to the Wasteland. I have some big ideas for the future of this sight, but I need capital donations to get my idea off the ground. |

I guess if you wont say it I will He owned the go to bar for coke and weed for many years. In addition there were lots of things in his bar that were damaged in the flood that no one could quite remember actually being there. Lastly for as big of a stand up guy he was his out of town silent partners/business associates were worse. Honestly I am amazed he is still alive considering who he associsted with. |

who drinks more, sales guys or pilots? the only pilot I know is a private aviator, not commercial or military, and he's a very light drinker. Pretty sure Sales Pros dominate the alcohol consumption game. I used to drink with a few pilots. I couldn't hang and then they would look at their watch and stop exactly when they legally had to so they could fly the next day. Might take a shot or two before they had to quit. it was pathetic. |
