For those of you railing on the QC's....when's the last time you actually spent time looking around the area? Yeah, 30 years ago when I lived here for the first time, it was a big-time union town, typical late 70's urban blight, crappy downtowns, etc. Fast forward my friends, look at where it's come from and where it's at: Multi music venues (Adler, I-wireless center, Bix Festival, huge 3-day July 4th festival by river, Circa-21 club) Minor league baseball/hockey Huge yearly auto show. QC airport. CSA population of 475,000. Four major down-towns are cleaned up. Any type of food you can imagine. Riverboat entertainment, Jumers, etc Some of the best high school sports in the state All the surrounding towns actually coordinate with each other so each summer weekend is unique Midwest Harley Swap meet at the fairgrounds The Putnam, The Rave. Mansion after mansion on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi on both sides. Best fair in the state except for the State Fair. A pretty neat zoo. Skiing in the area. Absolutely gorgeous motorcycle riding area...north/south along the river. Magnificent. The gateway to Chicago (2.5 hours away) and to Iowa (Iowa City 60 miles away). Opens up all kinds of Iowa sports opportunities and Iowa scholastic opportunities. I can make most Big-10 sport venues in 6 hours or less by car. The Mississippi makes it unique....barges, sea-birds, fishing, other river traffic....can't find it anyplace else. Every-time I drive through DSM, I am thankful I don't live there or Ames for that matter....land-locked, flat, square, boring, dreadful. I'll take the QCs anytime...over any other place in Iowa. I always have a great time in the QC's, but on that notion, I had a great time last week when I almost made it all the way to Twin to see Laker. Sorry Laker only made it to Knierem. The bar keep nearly shit her pants when we spent a 170 and gave her a 50 dollar tip.

Actually a very clean place. I think they have a limited menu on the weekend. Nothing fancy like Broaster Chicken or anything like that. They spun us a couple of frozen pizzas for 6 bucks a throw and we were content.

Did you know the layout of Ames is conducive to riots? I did not know that. pls expand on this for those of us who've nevar been to Story County, let alone ames proper. Ktks. I a sure he got it from the reddit comments. Here is what was said: –]nickreed -3 points 6 hours ago The crazy thing is, for all the wild things University of Iowa is known for (Number 1 party school in 2013 anyone?), I've never heard of this sort of riot behavior with mass destruction of property occurring (the closest we would get would be football tailgaiting season). Might be something to do with the fact that there are more bars in Iowa City than in Ames. Might just be the people. Who knows? All I know is that it was really weird to stand with my other U of I buddies in Ames and watch ISU students trash the city. [–]Overunderrated 6 points 5 hours ago Iowa City has a wildly different layout though. The geography of Ames and Welch Ave is kind of conducive to this in a way I can't think of in Iowa City. After past riots that had legitimate instigation, I think the general air is waiting for another one, so they start easily. [–]nickreed 3 points 5 hours ago* I agree that geography plays a big role. Ames and Iowa City have distinctive layouts. My comment wasn't meant to dog on Ames, it was just an observation. My guess is, if you asked the typical Iowan which college campus they would expect a large, destructive riot to break out in based on rudimentary knowledge of both Universities, most would say Iowa. Something like "lamp post falls on drunk guy's head" just seems more like an Iowa City story to me than an Ames story. But once again, I don't spend a ton of time in Ames, so I am relatively uninformed about the city.

NOT OUR FAULT
"Not a man, and no...I don't believe I'm wrong. The reputation it has undeservedly received is not due to actual VEISHEA events. It's due to students (who may or may not be a part of the VEISHEA efforts) and out of towners drinking too much and being too stupid to control themselves. VEISHEA did not cause this."
The out of towers came in and did this. Why did they come on? Certainly not for veisha. And never did I hear from a buddy in Ames that said "hey you have got to come to veisha and drink your face off the whole week". Nope. Never.
BAHAHA

Many of the people involved in the riot were student-aged and chanting a variety of things, according to Huff. At one point, he said, they were disparaging the University of Iowa Hawkeyes or yelling about VEISHEA.IT'S NOT ISU STUDENTS DOING THIS!!! IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT THEY'RE STUDENT AGED AND OBSESSED WITH IOWA!!! THAT'S NOT WHAT ISU IS ALL ABOUT!!!

Lulz there are people in the CryFan thread complaining that canceling VIESHA will reduce positive publicity for ISU. Seriously... The only people outside lames that know of VIESHA know it for the riots.
