Have any of you Des Moines people been to this? Thunder?
I was in Des Moines this past weekend and with my 14 year old and she heard about this and insisted that we stop by before we left town Sunday. I personally found it rather sad. They had these wild animals, bobcats, foxes, bears, wolves and others, in these cages. They were more like giant dog kennels with glass fronts sitting on the mall floor. They all had the same mulch in the floor and some logs.
Maybe it was the time of day but most were sleeping and/or avoided looking at the people watching them. The wolves seemed interested in my 14 year old and followed her every move and started pacing in their cage. (Just like men, they paid no mind to me...the old mother ) When they started jumping at the glass and standing on their hind legs, I was worried that they were going to break down the glass.
The cougar was impressive to see as were the wolves. However I just felt sad that they were in a damn mall and not outside. I'm just not sure how people are okay with this.

How did 'lil Red react to it? Did she share your malaise? She liked it because she likes seeing animals. I don't think she really thought about the conditions much.

Their slogan is "put some wild into your life." Because they took the life out of the wildlife.

No shit. At least at a damn zoo they'd have some fresh outside air. Here they have to smell the food court. Pretzels and Chinese. Zoos are depressing. Not all zoos. Some zoos are run and staffed by people who care about animals and their well-being and and are fueled by a desire to share their love of animals with others by educating the community about the natural world and the ways they can help preserve it. Otter zoos are run by asshole who want to make money by putting animals in cages and getting rubes to gawk at them. Their concern for the animals is that the animal is alive and people want to look at it.

I just watched that video. That's pretty much what it'slike but now the cages have glass fronts. And...they put in some different mulch and some logs.
Prior to a short educational show they played some wolf howling audio across the PA and that got all the animals stirred up, including the wolves. Then some guy and this other gal did their presentation from inside the wolf cage.
The wolves seemed friendly to them, but I learned early in life from little red riding hood and the gingerbread man that you never trust wolves or fox.

Update: that place was shut down. They are trying to locate new, humane homes for the animals.
