Cubs suck - predict when they will begin their annual tailspin. I think they'll be good through about the second week of May, then the batting averages will start coming back down and the pitching will stink up the joint.

I give them until Memorial Day to start to flounder. It'll happen. You can't out-run genetics.

Their bats will come down to Earth, that's for sure... the pitching will prob. get better. It's not like the Cubs pitching staff has lead the Majors in strikeouts the past 7 years, oh wait, yea it has. Rothschild has the pitching staff ready to go, that won't falter.

I (as a die hard cubs fan) will answer this honestly, and in the spirit in which the question was proposed.
Looking at their performance within my lifetime, after the all star break. I hope not, but hey- I've been rooting for them since I was 5, I can't get my hopes up too much, the come down hurts far too much.

They will inevitably go on a cold streak, every team does...but I think they win the division this year. I don't see any team in division with more talent. *bracing myself for the typical "ya but their the Cubs" comment*

I thought the Cubs would win it this year and I think they will. BUT, being the Cubs, they'll manage to keep things interesting for the rest of us. ;D

I was very pensive heading into this year, with very moderate hopes...
I REALLY like what I am seeing out of this team. It's a little better than the 2003 team (offense is better, pitching is a little down).

I'm thoroughly enjoying watching the Cubs this year. Their bats are hot right now, but all teams go through some type of slump. I say hold off on that as long as possible.
All is good in Chicagoland these days.

I agree with the post that gave them until Memorial Day. But what do I know, Spank already said I live in a "cloud of disdain". I really like that......that would be the perfect heavy metal band name. Rock On wasteland!!!

This team is playing very well, and I don't think they're playing above their heads. I'm sure they'll cool off a bit, but as far as a "choke job", franky, this team is built NOT to choke. 1-3 in the starting rotation are pretty solid, with Z being the "stopper".
There's run production up and down the order and, at least before last night's game, everyone in the order, 1-8, had an OBP above .400. That's VERY impressive.
As far as how successful the Cubs will be down the stretch or in October...I have no idea. However, I'll be extremely surprised if this team doesn't win 90+ games.

I'm not concerned about a "choke" as much as injuries to key players. And I'd like to see them add one more solid starter to the rotation. Otherwise, I feel very good about the way they're playing right now. Much better to pile up a bunch of wins early on and hit a mild slump later in the summer, rather than trying to play catch-up for the last eight weeks of the season.

Thier OBP is so high. Zambrano is so awesome. The girl who wasn't even voted hottest girl by a bunch of 14 year olds on Yahoo! was seen a Cubs jersey. Cub fans make me fucking sick.
I don't give a shit if PECOTA or whatever the fuck it is says the Cubs will win 162 games, that shit's all out the window when they start their annual chokefest, it ain't a question of if, it's a question of when. Then a bunch of guys like racerhawk will go buy their damn Cubs gear in the first week of October and be so heartbroken when the Cubs get knocked out of the playoffs in the first round. Hey fuckwits, by October, football is well under way and the Bears will be out of the playoff hunt already, so go cheer for Notre Dame and your hero, Jimmy Fucking Clausen. Cubs suck.
GO SOX!

A cute little tantrum indeed, and a microcosm of the attitude of many a Sox fan here. Reminds me a great deal of Iowa State fans or Illinois FB fans, actually. Huge chip on the shoulder, pay attention to me, petulent little brother syndrome. And then even when it all finally does go right, and they actually win a title, they're still second-best, still the adopted/overlooked child, still... well, not the Cubs. If the Cubs were actually to do the unthinkable and win a WS, the entire nation would be going nuts, just like when Boston got theirs in 2004 or whenever. The White Sox went nearly as long w/out a title, and no one else cared.

Hey d-nozzles, 400 drunk guys smashing shit outside of Wrigley and a reporter on location at Bumblefuck's Sports Bar in Bumblefuck [insert whatever shitty state you live in here] does not mean the whole nation gives a shit.
Yeah, you guys watched ESPN and a whole bunch of people were shown loving the Red Sox's victory. BFD. Those guys are all cut from the same mold as the Cub "fans." Baseball enthusiasts, like me and Scotthawk, would like nothing more than the Cubs to win a Series to stop the inane chatter that occupies the minds of the poors regarding "the murse" or whatever the hell it is cubs fans carry around to make themselves feel more Euro-chic (code for Eurotrash).
I honestly see damn near as many Red Sox hats or jerseys or shirts in an average day in my hood as I do White Sox gear. That makes me happy. It means that the frat boys and dumb broads who are wearing that shit are fair weather fans and don't know shit about baseball and won't drive ticket prices up in Comiskey and that when I roll down there, I can have half a row to myself, no line in the pisser and a beer man swinging by every half inning. That's what baseball's all about - the fair weather fan and the tourists from Hammond have ruined Wrigley. Hell, even I'll go drink there if admission is free, but if I want to go see a baseball game and have a Polish Sausage and rip farts all night, I'll go down to Comiskey.
Which reminds me chitown peeps - toss out a date for the wasteland's "getting wasted on the southside" trip.

OBP is a pretty good indicator of how a team is doing, and PECTOA is about the most acurate way to measure how a baseball team is expected to perform. For example, PECTOA was the only entity to foresee the White Sox sucking last year.
It has the Cubs winning 90+ games.
Again, I'm not predicting postseason sucess, but I will say that this is a very good ball team and you'd be wise to just admit that ralph.
