I'm worried if we don't get GDP negative here real soon and if the "stimulus" "rebate" checks spice up consumer spending, we might have had the mass media correctly predict yet another recession that didn't come. I'm sure the message of hope and change would still resonate strongly, and I doubt the candidates up for office will allow us to sleep at night with the massive economic crisis that we are living through.
I guess my lack of dismalness is what kept me from graduating with a 4.0 - it's pretty hard to do well in the "dismal science" when you're an optimist.

Pretending to be an economist today? Or did the news of the .6% growth of the economy pep you up today? Kind of makes me curious why the Fed is taking all of these anti-recession measures. What does Ralph know that he isn't telling them?

Actually, the news came out yesterday. The Fed would be better off to let a recession come, as I think a few negative quarters of GDP would have a less detrimental impact on the poor and elderly fixed incomers than this ridiculous weak dollar policy that has driven gas and commodity prices up so much. Although, the manufacturers would probably disagree with me.
The Fed's actions are much more aimed at Wall Street and trying to put a floor under the housing market bubble that it created than preventing GDP from going negative for a few quarters. If the Fed gave two shits about 98% of the individuals in this country, interest rates would be at least 2 points higher.

How about we fix some stupid shit and get rid of the fucking penny? In fact, get rid of every coin that we have now, and go with dimes, 20 cent, 50 cent and $1 dollar coins. $1 bills are a fucking waste of money because they are used so often and wear out fast. A $1 coin makes much more sense because they will last many more years than the average bill.
Also, lets get with the rest of the fucking world and go to the metric system. Chuck will love it because he can say he has a 12 cm penis and will make it sound huge initially, until people measure it out or get used to those measurements. The cost savings that I mentioned already would save our government lots of money and we'd be able then to do as the rest of the world and provide a single payer health care system as well.
Why would none of this happen? Cuz, 'Murica.

Coins on the other hand would last 30+ years before they'd have to be scrapped, melted and reminted (Hey, you can recycle them, tada!) Sure, they would cost quite a bit more up front, but hell, we probably have a shitton of $1 coins just sitting around waiting to be used, so there is already some supply already made. Keep the paper bills for $5 on up since they don't change hands near as often. Other countries have done this, and their cost savings to the taxpayers has been much higher than originally estimated when they made the switch. And as far as would you mind? Well, you'd get over it. Besides, you haven't seen fun until you have seen a stripper pick up a $1 coin with no hands.

I'ma wait for OK4P's opinion on the economics behind various forms of currency, if that's ok with you. No offense tho, playstation boi. I think coins are ultimately cheaper in the long run, but the calculus can change because the minerals used to make them are highly volatile in price. Japan's smallest bill is approximately $10. The thing that sucks about it is I fucking hate carrying change and I don't mind ditching 40 cents or whatever, but when you pay with a $10 and get $8 of change it sucks donkey ass. |

I use a goddam visa for personal spending, and a motherfucking amex for business spending. The only time I carried cash in the last 3 years was when I was tipping construction workers and tradesmen and movers, and just recently when i sold a bunch of stuff on craigslist. And that four hundo went right up muh nose. and yeah droid, credit cards are made out of PVC, so me FTW no matter what. Well, then if you don't carry cash, why do you care? You shouldn't. I write, maybe 2 checks a year, and it's only for things like the deposit on the rental or some weird place that doesn't make sense for cash, or they don't accept muh debit card. Otherwise, I use mostly cash. It's easier for me to budget out expenses, pay down debt, etc. Of course, many of my bills I use online bill pay with muh bank, so I guess you could say those are checks too. I'm not a sucker who uses credit cards just because they have nice limits. Keep a zero balance and only use for reimbursable business expenses. And at the grocery store, it's cash. Ask Tweet how he's enjoying dressing up like a 60's hippy chick today. |
