Okay Okeefe. Yesterday I decided to experiment with Kringla recipes. I made the one in that recipe I posted with yeast and anise seed. It was very putzy just like making bread. It seemed to take a long time to rise even though I was using quick rising yeast. After two risings I shaped them into figure 8's. I figured out that the recipe did not have a temperature for the oven. So I looked at other Kringla recipes and put it at 425. It baked very quickly and were a light golden brown . The second batch I cooked at 350 and they were very light.
I also made a batch of Kringla similar to your recipe. There were many online. The dough was easy to make but it had to chill for a while and of course rolling both recipes out into the cookie shape was a pain. In looks they both looked similar.
I actually preferred the first recipe with the yeast. My sister and her kids were visiting and they also seemed to like that one as well. She thought it was sweeter which was odd because it contained only 1/2 c sugar and the other contained 1 and 1/2 C sugar, but I think it was from sprinkling some sugar on top before baking. The anise flavor was very subdued and added a nice flavor. I think if you really really hated anise maybe you wouldn't like it but it's not like eating black licorice or drinking Ouzo. The other recipe was okay but seemed a little dry but it generally tends to be a drier cookie. Everyone liked those too and my husband seemed to prefer them.
My sister and I thought that the anise recipe reminded us of some cookies made by an Italian family that lived down the street where we grew up. They were awesome. And despite what you said about the anise in Norweigian cookies, there were several recipes on the Internet that had anise in the Kringla. When I lived in Germany a lot of cookies also had anise.maybe it's a regional thing.

Speaking of OMG Trader Joe's is coming to Coralville!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At least I think that is the response you are suppose to have. Why are people so high on Trader Joe's? We have one here and people just go apeshit over it. Their produce usually looks beat up and most of the other shit is over priced and a bunch is frozen and imported from other countries and probably never inspected. HyVee is where it's at. And Costco.
