It's been awhile bince we have had a discussion about this, and I can't find the thread we did have... so anyway, the whiff is in the market for a new laptop, but doesn't need anything too over the top. She won't be gaming or live streaming much, so I am thinking just a mid-priced, light-weight machine that will let her browse, do the MS-Office jazz, Skype with the grandkids, etc. She does generate a lot of docs at work, so good memory is a must...can't get her to back things up often enough. Seems like you all had opinions, so just wondering if anyone has recently been shopping?

Big fan of ASUS. Good quality, lower price. If you're interested in a good used laptop pre-loaded with Win 7, I might be able to help you find something. When my wife gave her Macbook Pro -- which she sorta didn't like -- to our oldest son for school, youngest son found her a refurbished HP Win 7 laptop that was like new from a big pharma company. She likes it a lot. Find me one. Bitch.

You might consider a Microsoft surface. Very reasonably priced and one doesn't have to keep anything on their hard drive if they don't want. I keep everything in folders on Gmail, have for literally years. Might be an affordable versatile machine, TL.....

The Surface Pro 3 is a damn good machine, and honestly will be way more than powerful enough to handle anything that she will use it for. Now, that said. It comes down to how portable of a computer that she will want. The Surface is basically a slightly larger iPad that is a full on rather powerful tablet that does everything a laptop can do. I've used/worked with many of them and they are really great. However, for the cost and if portability isn't a factor you could save some money by getting a decent midline laptop. The only thing that a midline laptop (in the 5-600 range) will have over the surface is that it will likely have more Hard Drive space. Now, if you use cloud storage for files, that can definitely negate things, or by using an external HDD to store things like pictures/things you don't open frequently/etc which again puts the Surface ahead.
What kind of budget are you looking at to get one?

LOL windows 7. Stollolol, I though you were Mr chromebook guy? Windows 8 is just fucking turible...... LOL.. No, no it isn't. It's a fucking great OS. Sure, there is a learning curve as far as figuring out the small nuances. But also, MS will be providing a free upgrade to Windows 10 when that is released later this year for everyone with Win 7/8 and that will bring back the start button layout similar to what people are used to. In my use, win 8 is even more stable and it actually runs more efficiently than win 7.

So even MS finally admits Win 8 sucks by offering free upgrade from both 7 and 8 when Win10 becomes available. Look, there's an old saying that to figure out the best places to eat in a new town, go to where the cars are. There has been, and continues to be, strong demand for Win7 machines -- new and used -- even as they are gradually phased out. Why? BECAUSE WIN 8 SUCKS!!!! Take the word of someone who works and lives and breathes technology. Windows 7 is good, but windows 8 is a far more solid and stable OS in comparison. Why is MS offering the update to Win 10 for free? Why not get all of your customers on the newest and most secure OS that they are putting tons of effort and work into. It is based off the Win 8 insides, just with a prettier interface to help out those too fucking stupid to understand how to run it because it's different. Apple offers free OS upgrades for their OS (within reason, really old can't handle the newest). Does that mean that Apple admits that their OS is a steaming pile of dogshit? Win 7 updates will cease to happen in the near future and it benefits everyone to move up to Windows 10 to get all the support that they will need.

Waht about updating a desktop from XP to win 10? Probably just should forget it, Huh?

I liked 7 but my favorite was XP. 98SE was my 3rd favorite OS. I don't use 8 much since I got my iPad. I've only turned my laptop on maybe five times in the year since I went with a tab.

I use 8.1 and love it the most. I was an early adopter. As was. I got an 8 machine within the first month of its release.

Maybe you could give to laker. I think I still have an old PC with win 98se in my garage... I've had a laptop with win 8 for almost two years now. Even so I still get frustrated with it because I'm not used to the difference in the layout. Since I'm usually only internet surfing I'm not spending quality time getting to know all of its specialness. The novelty of it all wore off after about 6 months. I never use the apps. I hate the email app.

You improvise, you overcome, you adapt.

Why not Windows me? I personally disliked xp. Slow boot no matter what the pc had for power. Driver issues with many games and video card. Vista was better than xp purely on the security side of the is. Sure Vista was shifty at first but it got fixed and worked pretty decently until 7 came out. 7 was everything that ms wanted Vista to be. But the archaic start button was still an annoyance, using pinned apps to the taskbar was great and that what I do with win 8. Didn't spend much time in the fancy window as I didn't have a touchscreen so only went there for a few things but I lived in the Windows mode. The surface pro steps it up even more, ducking great hardware. Its basically a full on fast as shit tablet that is also your main computer.
