Back home, at work. Wish I were back over there. Soon. The wheels are now in motion.
Also, the fact that there is no decent Doner Kebap here in this area and probably anywhere in the US is another negative. And the beer, way way way better over there.

I bet you can’t get BTN over there. Sure can. Watched an earlier game on Saturday on there just to see what time the Hawks game was. Saw that it started at 2am Munich time and figured that since it was just against UNI I didn't want to risk no sleep before my flight to watch Kirk piss down his leg for me. But yea, it worked just fine with the mobile app.

So Sioux, any luck with your job search yet? If only I spoke better German, or I was a fucking developer I'd probably be shit canning half my shit right now. But getting lots of good feedback and have only been applying for jobs the past week.

My Germany is great for ordering beer and pork hocks, but would suck for directing the work of a team of engineers, so for now my dream of relocating to the fatherland will only be lived out a week or two at a time. Although i did have an out of the blue LinkedIn request from an engineering firm in Koln, so who knows?

I'm working on it. Just got off a phone interview with a plastic company over there. Seemed like it went well. Since the tariffs took over, they are growing a lot since China has a favorable deal with them and are expanding their business.

Your family still in Iowa? Just curious because it fucking sucks trekking your kids around the globe to see the family. I remember you posted a pic of your son a few years ago - my guess is he's around 5 now - is that right? I assume they have an American school - would you try to send him there at least until he learns some German? You got him learning German now? What about your old lady? If your kid ain't in school yet, it prolly ain't a big deal, but I wouldn't throw him straight into German school if he's already in school. My boy is doing full Japanese school here. They got a big Japanese school down here that follows the national curriculum. Do they have some shit like that near you for German school so you can get your boy started.

The oldest just started kindergarten, but "school" doesn't really start until 6 in Germany. They are both young enough that they can and will pick up German fast. We'd probably send him straight to a Kita to get immersed in the language. Most of them deal with kids that only speak English and help them learn the language so they'd be fluent enough for 1st grade. The 2 year old would probably be fine by the time he'd get to school age. And not sure if we'd do an American school, but probably more of an immersion kindergarten type of school for him. Family is mostly in Texas and Florida now, but we honestly don't visit them all that often. That will be a bridge we cross later on. I do have the youngest sit with me while I do some german lessons on the weekend and he's understanding a little bit of it. My wife will enroll in a language school when we get there so that she can get as fluent as possible and then once that is good and the kids are settled with school things get her back to working then. They really don't have a German school here in KC, so that's pretty much not going to happen in this area. We'll roll the dice and see what makes the most sense when we get there. We watch some of his favorite cartoons in German as well and he can sing the Robocar Poli theme song in German. So are you planning on a move to Japan as to why your son is in Japanese school? Or just to make him easily adapt on your trips back to Japan?

Or just to make him easily adapt on your trips back to Japan? Nah, we ain't moving to Japan. We love it where we live. My wife is never going to be a US citizen, but she can't fathom trying to raise a kid in Japan due to the crowding and institutional rigidity and she doesn't want our son in their school system because she thinks they would be racist against him there. We just want to make sure our boy can qualify for Japanese university if he wants to go there. I have no clue what the kid will want to do. The biggest thing I will warn you about is fatigue after a few months. Having kids in a place where you (or more importantly your wife) doesn't speak the dominant language can be tough. Just random shit like parent teacher conferences, dr. appointments or trying to figure out what you have to do to gain admission to a play area can be a gargantuan fucking challenge. Germany is more English friendly than Japan, but there is still a huge percentage of the population that can't or won't speak English. Particularly if your wife doesn't pick it up quickly, she could get miserable really fast. If you're gonna move, though, you gotta do it pretty soon. You don't want to uproot your oldest once he is a few years older. Kids brains' can pick up a second language very easily before 10. I'm fucking shocked that there is no German school there. Down here, the state and chambers of commerce have bent over backwards to set up schools. There are two German schools for the BMW and ZF expats. They got a K-12 full time French school that the government and Michelin set up when they opened their US HQ here. There is a Japanese school that the Japanese government set up because they have so many Boeing and BMW suppliers down here. And then the school district has set up Spanish and Mandarin immersion classes. Sounds like the government and chamber of commerce up there are fucking retards if they don't have a language school that covers the 4th largest GDP in the fucking world.

Yea, it would be a huge pain in the ass for you to get set up to work in a legal role there in Japan as well, on top of your normal bullshit as well. And yea, Japan isn't exactly full of open space for you to have a place with enough room to do whatever. That's a good plan to give your son as many doors to use in the future should he choose to do so. It will be pretty big to do that type of move, learn a language and having the family acclimate to a different culture. Berlin (where this company is at) has a ton of English speaking communities, at least more so than other areas of Germany. The wife and I took a trip there a couple of months ago and had a blast and even when talking to people who had little or no English skills we still were able to communicate with them rather well. My wife did take 3 years of German in High School so she will at least be able to remember some of the things she remembered back then. And I agree, if we are going to do it, I want it to happen in the next year or two at the most as I don't want to make it a very difficult transition for the kiddos. And Welcome to Missouri, they don't care about the cities because of those damn liberals.

And Welcome to Missouri, they don't care about the cities because of those damn liberals. So you guys went to Berlin, presumably on vacation or a short business trip, and now you want to move? Moving's a pretty big fucking deal, dude. Have you tried living in a US city? If you've only lived in places like Iowa and Kansas City, I can see how you'd be sick of that shit. There's no nature, the winter sucks and the culture pretty much sucks. Have you considered Chicago? I hated it because there were too many batshit nuts liberals around who had no qualms about raising the ever living fuck out of taxes, but if you are looking for somewhere more liberal you can get a pretty damned nice house with a yard and still be walking distance to the train and great culture and entertainment for a really good price there. It's a totally different world than Strip Mallsville, Missouri. If I were in your shoes, my biggest reservations on moving would be my wife getting pissed off after 6 months and portability back into the US job market. I recall your family had a bunch of ground, so maybe you don't really give a fuck about money, but if you have annual cash flow needs that require a job, I'd think long and hard about moving somewhere like Chicago or maybe the DC area if you want more mild winters just to get the fuck out of KC or possibly even Denver. KC is the type of place a guy like Jan thinks is awesome, which tells me it sucks. To me, it felt like a bigger version of Neck Moines or Omaha with a few pro sports teams. Blech. Maybe you just need to move to an actual city and not live in Kansas City. That shit fucking wears on your psyche, man. It's just big enough where you have to deal with nutkick traffic, but it's in the middle of absolutely nowhere and has balls hot summers and balls cold winters. Look, bruh, I don't want to prod, but I've lived in a foreign country and it's fucking great when you're in your early 20's, but a world different when you've got two little ones and I just want to make sure you are doing that shit for the right reason, not "me and my old lady went there and had fun" because I always have fun on vacation.

We visited a few cities in Germany and really enjoyed it. It's been a pipedream for both my wife and I for several years, but decided that if we were ever going to do it, now is the time with the kids being young. My wife was born and raised in Chicago, and we also lived in Dallas/Fort Worth for several years as well. So not exactly small town stuff. Yea, the culture sucks here and honestly even in places like Chicago and DFW it sucks too. Traffic in KC honestly isn't that bad to be fair. Yea, there are shit drivers, but not as bad as they were in Texas. We loved how accessible and easy the public transportation is in Germany as well as how easy and cheap vacations can be to many different countries. I'd have lower hours of work per week, and more than double my current vacation time and unlimited sick time. I'd be able to spend considerably more time with the family than I do now. Now, the other big reason is to give our kids better options in their life as they get to be adults where they can learn another language and take advantage of better schooling options without ending up owing a shit ton with student loans. The school systems in the US for the most part suck, even though I live in one of the better school districts in the state/Metro. We aren't doing this just because we had fun on vacation, we have many reasons why and know that it will provide a better standard of living for all of us.
