What are you going to do for vacation? Hopefully something more exciting then cleaning and painting a deck... What did you do? Clean and paint? WTF It gets even sadder. The deck was in rough shape because the last time I cleaned it and restained it (solid color) was 15 years ago. The vertical surfaces still had a lot of solid color stain that was fine but the horizontal surfaces were a mess. The top rails were warped. The floor boards were mostly black from mold and a few were warped and rotted. I got some deck cleaner shit and spent a couple days spraying that shit on and scrubbing. Didn’t have a power washer if you recall. Well it cleaned up good. Then on Saturday I started sanding. From 11 am to 7 pm. In the sun. All but a few steps and the insides of about a billion balusters. It was looking really good. I decided to finish planting about 20 flowers and mulching a garden. We had bought a few cedar boards to replace the boards we had to replace because the lumber yard dude said they were the same size as the green treated wood and we could stain right away they said. So after removing two adjacent boards, the husband discovered after putting down the two replacement boards that they were NOT the same size as the prior boards. They are wider and not as deep. So today we talk to the lumber guy and he was surprised because they should be the same dimension. The deck is over 20 years old so I dunno...do they change the size of lumber in that time? Wtf? So here’s the sad part...after all that work I did, my husband is probably just going to replace all the boards with cedar. So much for saving money.

That more expensive shit will rot long before treated would.

That more expensive shit will rot long before treated would. Well especially since it’s not as thick. And I’m sure it’s not Cedar from heartwood. I’ve been very surprised how good the treated wood cleaned up. I have looked at it under the deck and it appears to be in great shape. My deck is only exposed to sun in the morning so I think the fact that it’s not beaten down by the sun all day has helped it last as long as it has.

Finding or cutting a few boards to fit should be pretty simple. Even in minnysoda.

You can work around that... Go to Harbor freight and get an $8 hand planer, pull up the boards next to the one you are replacing and plane down the joists where the floorboards touch.
Or... Shim that fucker

Yes be high whenever possible.
Was the deck originally made from good ole regular treated boards? There are "decking" boards these days that are smoothed/planed/rounded/super-treated and they're smaller in size than regular size boards. Ran into this on my dad's deck on his new house.
Fuck cedar..
Don't waste time fucking hand planing anything either for the love of fuck it all.
Get high too

Lets be honest here. If any of us here had these two genetics we would be sprinkling meth on our cereal in the morning. Drugs are literally the only thing they have going for them.
