I’m really thinking that my gas guzzling 2005 minivan with 235,000 miles is past it’s prime and it’s time to move to hybrid or electric. Look, toots, I'm going to give you a piece of advice that I'm sure you'll disregard, but don't buy a pure electric car up there. Get a plug-in hybrid. My neighbor has a Pacifica plug in hybrid and it's a decent rig and the power company gives him a grand a year if he doesn't plug it in to charge during weekdays. This is the correct answer. You get 30 miles of battery driving which covers a lot of work commutes and in town errands, plus you get the regular range of a regular car. You still get all the tax credits for buying am electric vehicle also.

I’ve always liked the RAV4 but I’ll probably get the Toyota Highlander hybrid. I think Toyota is only selling hybrids of the Sienna minivan and highlander now.

Is it a plug in? Again, toots, like I said above, get a plug in version. There's no point in mining all that lithium and shit if you ain't going plug in. If you just drive around town, you can slash your gas consumption to almost zero other than in the ballz cold winter.

Again can confirm. The hybrids dont qualify for federal tax credits. The plug in hybrids do, which makes them significantly cheaper than the hybrids. Most states also reimburse a huge percentage of your in home charging station. The hybrids just give you a small efficiency gain driving around town, and due to their significant cost increase over gas only models, you usually have to own them for a decade or more just to break even.

Plus, when the battery goes tits up after 6 years, you gotta buy a new one which will make breaking even impossible. I think that there is big promise with plug in hybrids, but a regular old hybrid is just nonsensical. The moderate fuel efficiency upside does not justify the use of the battery resources that go into them. If you want mileage, just throttle down a regular gas engine. Hell, the GEO Metro could put up Prius-type efficiency numbers in 1990.

Put a 20 mile battery in a big fucking v8 and get 50mpg on the forumla and 14mpg in real life doing 120mph.

I drove it to the mountains and I think it got about 7 mpg going up to the Tennessee border. If I were Ford and wanted to calculate fuel mileage, I would drive it from the Tennessee border to the SC border and show how great it is. It barely used any gas going down, but I went from a full tank to thinking "holy shit is this thing gonna even make it to a gas station" pretty quickly on the way up. A small motor and a 20 mile battery, plus that grade would be a great testing ground. "Look at this, we just went 50 miles and only used a quart of gas! Let's mark the mileage as 200 mpg!"

Boohoo. Now I’lll have to pay more for gas. This is great news. I bought XOM at $38 and VLO at 41. Those sumnabitches are just printing fucking money right now. Hopefully that neocon in the white house will fire up the war machine in the Middle East again so we can get back to $100 a barrel. Let me give you some advice, toots, if oil sinks again and you can buy ticker symbol XLE under 35, pull the trigger. Maybe will even be a decent deal at 40. With all this money printing we're gonna see a big run in oil like we did back before the crash in 2009 once demand starts coming back. I don't want to hear you bitching about $4 gas, I want you to be like "fuck yeah, $4 gas, I'm going out to buy a 10 gallon hat and bolo tie." Does anyone know where I can buy a 10 gallon hat?
