I always threaten our cats and dogs with knocking them in the head and throwing them into one of the snake cages. :' Actually, snakes in the wild and those in captivity are different when it comes to feeding, as are most animals. Wild animals are looking to survive and will feed on anything. Captive snakes are, to some extent, taught to recognize what is food and what isn't. Sometimes is takes a while to train certain types of snakes to eat certain rodents. For instance, ball pythons are sometimes resistant to rats because it is not a natural source of food. While I would never trust my big ones around the cats, for instance, they walk around in front of the cages and the snakes never strike at them. There is a school of thought that they do not even recognize dogs, cats, etc., as food sources when in captivity because those smells are always there and do not equate to food.
