Ever had this happen? The other day, I get home and the wife reports that she heard some "scratching" and carrying on within the walls behind our bed. I kinda laughed at her and never heard a thing. Last night, I heard it. Scratching, rustling, etc. Pissed me off. I am THINKING that it's a squirrel, but I'm really not sure. When my wife originally reported this to me, I went around the house and did a quick check. I didn't see any sign of an entry point for any critter. But, there is DEFINITELY something in there. I am considering getting a live trap and setting it up in the attic. However, we have four cats and a dog. Maybe I could just send the whole zoo up there instead. That would make for some cheap entertainment! What says the board? Anyone else ever encounter something like this? How did you take care of it?  |

Set up the traps in the attic and basement, just to be safe. You don't want the pets falling through the attic floor if any damage has been done.

I'm wondering if it might be a damned bird. There have been a few occasions where I have left the garage door up, and then came back into the garage to see a few birds fly out. It just pisses me off. As if we don't have enough critters in our house, now we have one (I HOPE that is all!) that's not even ours!  |

I would say it is probably a damn mouse. But if you thought it could be a squirrel it sounds like the thing is making a louder scratching sound than a mouse would make.
Maybe you should just do like the dumbass in Missouri did and try to blow a hole in your wall with a gun then this thing can escape or you can shot it in the wall, just make sure no one is on the other side.

It could be that slowly-starving-to-death hobo you kidnapped from behind the ham processing plant that one time.

Thought about that too bince this thing is active at night. But, it sounds like a single critter and I undestand that bats tend to travel in packs. If it is a bat I'm guessing it is dark between the walls and this thing should be active all day. |

Do you live in an apartment or condo?
If so, your bedroom might be adjoining to the neighbor's bedroom.
That scratching noise may not be an animal as much as it is animalistic sex.

They do tend to travel in packs but of all of the bats-in-house experiences I have heard of it has been a single bat that probably got separated. Look on the bright side, if it is a bat it will take care of your bug problems this summer. |

I hope it is not a bat. Mostly because I have NO idea how I would trap a bat! A friend of mine used a tennis racket and beat it. |

If it's a bat and it gets into the living quarters.....use a tenis racket because just a simple swat will kill it. They are pretty fragile. They are erratic so don't be surprised if you swing and miss a few times before you nail him.

If the critter is chewing away at one of your load bearing walls, you should call pest control (Orkin, etc.) & a qualified contractor. As you don't want the frigging house taking you out.
It could be any kind of critter. Mice & Rats (and hundreds of other rodents) chew constantly. Birds are more sporadic with their movements. Squirrels squeak occasionally. Termites just eat & eat. Mogwai tend to sing if happy, so if you hear singing - pound on the wall to piss them off.
But frankly, I'd be wary of whatever it is. Because it could be the carrier to the "28 Days" virus - or the "I am Legend" thing... and it's slowly eating its way through your walls.

Since we do not own a tennis racket, I will likely take this route. |

Thought I may have heard some fluttering though which makes me think bats or birds. I'm gonna do some research on the net, look into some live traps, and go from there. I will update you guys on what happens. And thanks for the advice/speculation everyone! |

You could always drill (or shoot) a hole in the wall slightly above where the noise is --- then fill the space with a can of that crack foam...
Entomb the thing --- or at a minimum, deaden the sound.
