I have an idea. Let's outlaw free speech. It's working well in France.

The Chief was a "symbol", as you put it, that represented Illinois. I'm not defending the "Horry Kow" t-shirt, that's ridiculous, but to imply that Cubs fans are somehow inherently racist or stupid because of that is a truly ridiculous argument.

There are retards all over society. For example...everyone in C-U who thinks this is an acceptable mascot: just like the fighting irish mascot perpetuates the illusion that irish people are belligerent drunkards. WE SHOULD BE TERRIBLY OFFENDED AND SUPPORT LAWS TO BAN IT. Peddle your bullshit somewhere else duschebag, where sheep take it up the but by people who claim to be enlightened. Furthermore, as long as a portion of my money goes to pay for 300 year old reparations, I shouldn't have to hear about a vanquished nation getting tax free status or crying over a mascot. Where does it end?

Where does it end? Maybe you could replace the Irish mascot with a douchebag, complete with your spelling of it... "duschebag." That would be about perfect. The Notre Dame Fighting Duschebags. I like it. Now, guys, what should Illinois now be called?

Where does it end? I'm not sure the ND mascot perpetuates the idea of drunken Irishmen. I DO think it perpetuates the myth that there are leprechauns that give a damn about an American Catholic university though. If you don't think "The Chief" is an obscenely racist mascot stock, I don't know what to tell you other than our views on society differ greatly.

Because 8 guys who belong to a tribe of Native Americans and 8,000,000 liberal fascists said so. He is way worse than the Seminole. Maybe if Illinis would step it up and start winning some national titles in football, the NCAA would get the hell of their back.

How does a Harvard Law School alumnus misspell "brethren" on an iowa message board? Those claims of elitism now ring hollow. Perhaps autolykos & bigtimeralph can find a job for me at BMCLF as Chief (Illiniwek) Proofreader. Pay me $130K and my law degree from a 6th tier Chicagoland law school will now be worth it.

How is the chief an "obscenely racist mascot"? A white kid dressing up in Native American garb and war paint doesn't strike you as racist at all? I find it racist in the same way I would find someone dressing up in blackface and going to Halloween as Michael Vick last year racist: The FSU mascot is affiliated with the Seminole tribe in name only. Though I still find it pretty racist. The Seminole tribe disagrees wtih me, but when you view that as just another marketing ploy, maybe your principles are set aside: www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-161121734.htmlwww.iht.com/articles/2005/08/24/sports/COLLEGE.php

Please define racist and then apply the facts of each circumstance to the definition that you set forth.
1) Horry Cow shirt 2) Chief Illiniwek 3) Mike Vick guy 4) Seminoles
I'm interested to see a rigorous application of facts to the definition rather than a sentence that says "This is racist because I said so."

I don't think that the majority of Native American mascots are racist. For the simple fact that they are not making fun of, or portraying negative stereotypes. I liken the white kid in the Illini outfit to a 4 year old going to the grocery store with his mom in a spiderman costume. The kid isn't disrespecting spiderman, he is really showing his respect instead. I mean, the chief isn't a caricature is it? Don't they try to make the costume as authentic as they can (excepting the pasty white dude)? Vick guy, obviously racist, obviously MEANT to be offensive. Horry Cow, pokes fun at, and plays off a racial stereo type = racist.

I find them all equally racist Ralph. It seems racism in this country is a matter of what one finds objectionable. If you don't find the things I've listed as objectionable...that's fine. We can agree to disagree. I find them all very racist. I am NOT calling you, or anyone else who disagrees with me racist, we just see things differently. So, do I have any "facts" to back up that each are racist? No. I do think there's a double standard to a certain extent when it comes to finding Native American things "racist". It would not fly in American society if there were a university with a caricature of a black person as its mascot. To not find a Native American "mascot" racist is a mystery to me...though I do not begrudge you your opinion that those things are not racist.

MoHawk,
How is the white guy dressing up as Michael Vick racist? After all, Vick is black and the white guy that portrayed him simply made himself look more akin to Vick's actual look. If I was to dress up as the Incredible Hulk, would I be a racist simply because I painted my face green to look more like the Hulk actual appearance? What about when Arsenio Hall dressed up as the white, Jewish gentleman who hung out at the barbershop in the movie Coming to America? Was that racist? Under your rationale, it would be (i.e. anytime someone portrays or conveys an image of something they are not, this equates to racism).
Washington Redskins is racist. Same for the goofy-looking Chief Wahoo mascot the Cleveland Indians used to have on their hats as it conveyed the image that Native Americans were less smart than others. Illinois' chief and Florida State's nickname are NOT racial statements nor do they convey racism.

MoHawk,
One last thing. In your opinion, where does the use of all things Native American stop being racist? Are the state names "Iowa", "Utah", "Massachusetts" and "Connecticut" racist?

Damn! We got some thin skinned folks in this world! Lets take them one by one:
1) Horry Cow shirt.....Harry Carry wore over sized black rimmed glasses......Harry Carry was also well known for saying "Holy Cow!"......Japanese folks are just as well known for pronouncing "L's" in wordage as "R's"......they also have slanted eyes......Fukudome is Japanese......hence "Horry Cow!". It is f'ing comedy! 2) Chief Illiniwek......It is the portrayal of an Indian Chief. Indians are known historically as great fighters. It is a tribute. Even most Indians have an appreciation for that. 3) Mike Vick guy......The guy is white. For him to portray the Indian, makeup helps......otherwise, he doesn't look like an Indian......he dressed up in character......self explanatory. 4) Seminoles......See Chief Illiniwek......same same.
I'm a white guy. Should I be offended every time someone depicts a white guy? Stop creating racism where racism doesn't exist. These people who keep race bating are going to do nothing but make themselves insane.
