So for the last year oct of 2017 my healthcare organization has updated their EMR again.
If you all recall in 2013 we updated our hospital EMR to Cerner. We have had our clinic EMR for some time. During that Cerner implementation I worked my ass off, especially the last 4 months with 12 +hour days, and working 7 days a week and going without sleep for at least 32 hours on go live. For all of that, at a thank you banquet afterwards everyone received a gift bag that contained a fucking fake stainless steel looking picture frame emblazoned with our hospital logo and a poem about putting a picture of your family in there so you can remember them.
Fast forward to sept 29, 2018 and I worked without sleep even longer at go live as we replaced both the Cerner and clinic EMR with Epic. My “partner” who wasn’t much help the first time was even LESS help this time. Despite being on the same fucking work calls for the past year he contributed nothing on his own. Only if I asked him to do something he would do it but only if it was a rote assignment like taking a spreadsheet I had prepared and confirmed the information on it was in the new system. And then he had the nerve to bitch about it. I painstakingly made these spreadsheets so that it would take less time to check the data then it did to prepare them. September of 2017 we were told that we would not be allowed to take vacation at all the last three months of the project so from mid July to the end of October so no vacation for me but then I find out that not only did he get approval by my boss for a vacation in September, it was the week before and included go live and shortly after. Because he had not been very involved even when he came back he wasn’t helpful because he didn’t know how to fix or investigate any problems. After less than two weeks of working he was off again on another weeklong vacation.
I got an email a couple of weeks ago saying I would be seeing a $1000 bonus in my check taxed at the supplemental wage tax whatever that is and I just figured out that my check went up less than $300. Fuck me. There’s supposed to be an epic celebration at some fancy golf course in a week or so and trying to decide if I should go.
6:00pm social and buffet dinner
7:00pm Thank you and epic Toast
8:00pm Hot chocolate and coffee bar opens.
7:30pm Dr Hemann will present “A community of stars” -weather permitting (dress warmly for an outdoor presentation)
Didn’t see anything about booze. And what the fuck...it’s supposed to be below zero next week and what the fuck are they going to show outside?
I’m still working long days because of all the issues with Epic communication with my system and trying not to kill patients.

Jesus H. Christ, how did you guys do an implementation to anything OTHER THAN EPIC in 2013? That is fucking moronic. And fuck them for working you like that. You shouldn't have done it. Those fuckers literally saved 7 figures by not outsourcing the migration and implementation. This is some total bullshit. Are there no other jobs near you? Look, I ain't in IT, but I've been legal fuck monkey on a bunch of outsourcing and synergy implementation bullshit after M&A deals and this is just not the shit you foist on some hapless fucker at your company in exchange for a picture frame or a thousand dollar check. Christ, my brother got tasked with overseeing the project manager on a SAP to Oracle migration for just his department and got close to a half a million bucks in cash and options because it was such a nut kick and they were scared he would leave and the thing would be fucked. You just can't do this shit to people. This is fucking infuriating.

Other than quickly checking that duff isn’t posting pics of naked ladies with compound fractures I haven’t had time to check back in. It was stupid that they didn’t get Epic to start with in 2013 and they went the cheap route with Cerner and got a version where you share domains with other hospital systems. A nightmare. Support has been terrible. They didn’t outsource anything for the Epic project. The “informatics” department hired from within our org about 50 nurses, MA’s, etc to be trained to get Epic certification and then to help implement and train for epic. They chose at this time not to go with epics lab and radiology system so we were supposed to work with Epic to integrate our systems. They did not train lab and rad people on Epic so it was difficult because we didn’t understand how the system works and what it is capable of. And of course neither do the newly trained and epic certified people that have never managed an information system before but think they know it all now. You’d have these folks building the radiology appointment section without even taking to me about how it was going to work leading to a lot of rework. Epic did a workflow analysis of what the orgs current workflows are but there were no discussions on how to make workflows better. The problem is that we had two billing systems and two EMRs before and there were tons of workarounds to get things to work and then they just built those same shitty workflows into epic but no workarounds so shit doesn’t work. If I was queen I would have been asking questions about how we envision the best future workflows and worked toward that goal instead of keeping things the same. Then all these people that they hired are basically temps and will go back to their old jobs but I know damn will some will fight to keep the IT jobs. My concern is that in the next couple of years they will move radiology to epics system and then have theses lame assed people take over managing it. |

I spend the day trying to stay on top of problems and get very little assistance from the people that should be handling the issue. I just don’t want to get blamed for killing someone, frankly, because someone doctor didn’t get a result in a timely manner. It won’t matter about my partner... my boss won’t do anything. He knows he doesn’t do shit....well he does roboot the servers once a month. Immediately before the epic project we were working on a new voice rec system and “Wally” was supposed to be in charge of it but he would just send assignments to me from the project manager and then on conference calls he would never talk or take charge but I did so then all the folks on the project came to me for information anyway. He’s my third male partner since 2005 and the longest since 2009. The first guy was a friend of my boss and he was older than me but was a complete idiot and could only do rote work and even then I would have to re-explain how to do something he just did last week because he would forget. He lasted maybe a year and a half? I worked 12+hours all the time because he couldn’t do anything. The second guy was younger than me and also was a friend of my boss and came from IT support. He lasted 6 months maybe? He was completely fucking worthless. Work to him was just fucking around and he spent his days souping up his new big work computer, watching movies, updating Facebook and disappearing for hours at a time. One time I was sitting right next to him explaining how to do something and then I realized he was asleep! He was a big gamer and stayed up late gaming all of the time. Despite all my complaints my boss stuck up for him and told him I needed to tell him to do his job...except I wasn’t his boss. I nearly quit then so they finally had him resign. Then came “Wally” who is a nice enough guy but he’s not going to do anything more than necessary. Until him I was still a wage earner so at least I got overtime for all the extra hours I worked but Wally convinced my boss to make us salaried as he was salaried in IT where he came from and he wanted to sleep his vacation time. He’s also a friend of my boss. (There’s a pattern here...) He comes in early and takes two 15 minute breaks and his 30-45 min lunch and leaves promptly 81/2 hrs after he stars. His attitude is “that work is all going to be there tomorrow” so he doesn’t stress about it ...or deadlines. He will do things if told but doesn’t go out of his way to find work. When he was hired I was told I wasn’t his boss either. He mostly handles the IT side and computer hardware issues. Most people know if they want something done they come to me. |

FYI I have been working on finishing my degree from the U of I. 30 years ago it was for a BSN with the plan to be a nurse midwife when I grew up. But I obviously those plans are gone. Iowa is letting me keep all my credits from 30 years ago and apply them to a different degree. My plan is to finish my degree (online) from the college of medicine with a BS in Radiation Science. Not sure what that will do for me except get me started on my own priority for football tickets, but my hope is that at least my resume won’t be immediately discarded for lack of a bachelors. I could have went the easier route and did the BS in liberal studies but since I have worked in radiology since I was 17, I went with what I know. I had to take some damn math classes to get into the program and had I had the time and the money to take 3 classes this fall and 3 next spring I would have graduated spring of 2019 but it will be 2020 instead.

Fucking morons probably could have spent a million or two million bucks today and saved 5x that over the next several years. In terms of self made rich women in the US, that lady who started Epic is the king of the hill IMHO. My buddy interviewed for a commercial counsel job up there and it was senior enough that he had to interview with that lady. Said the place seemed like it would have been horrible to work for, but that the lady who ran it was probably the smartest person he had ever met. |

You are in a real shit position then because you have made yourself irreplaceable and therefore unpromotable. They'll keep you there and your boss will keep hiring his flunky friends as long as he can get away with it. If you plan on staying I would advise you to go to HR and put the issue before them. Your boss isn't doing his job as a personnel manager and that would have affected patient care if you hadn't been picking up the slack for him and your co-worker and that's not acceptable. |
