Question for the resident lawyers, the daughter is seriously entertaining pre-law as a major. I have no doubt she would kick ass.
I know there is an entire triple-rainbow of specializations once working, but how much does that change the coursework for the JD itself? So, will an imperfectly chosen course taken Sophomore year - possibly prohibit entire branches?

So, will an imperfectly chosen course taken Sophomore year - possibly prohibit entire branches? Are u talking soph year of law skool (2L) or undergrad? If she’s gunning for patent law she’ll need an engineering degree. It’s a separate area with a separate accreditation. Otherwise the juris doctor degree kind of speaks for itself, although if she has a specific field in mind she’ll obviously want to take relevant electives outside the core curriculum just for the sake of subsequent familiarity if nothing else. As for undergrad, just nail the stupid LSAT

I would strongly advise against prelaw as a major. Same with anything that ends in "studies." Law school admission comes down to 2 things, the LSAT and GPA, but the LSAT is probably given 80% of the weight meaning you can overcome a shitty GPA with a high LSAT score unless you're talking Harvard, Yale or Stanford.
Undergrad course work only matters for the patent bar. And a bunch of the classes in law school are totally fucking worthless. Only classes I took after 1L that were worth a shit were tax, securities and M&A (which was a horrible fucking class because the prof worked at Latham and ran us through a fucking meat grinder which I hated at the time but then realized despite the prof's mild Aspergers created the most useful class in law school because it was the only one that duplicated the sheer shit show of being a lawyer).
I'd wager that the smartest lawyers I've known were people who majored in philosophy or something science or math heavy like physics. The classes at the collegiate level that actually impose rigorous thinking requirements rather than regurgitation of "ORANGE MAN BAD" will honestly serve her best in the long run.

Thanks for the info guys.
Interesting on the philosophy /non-pre law statement. She was interested in many of the PHI course titles, but I guess I didn't see much of a career path. She has a unique opportunity to graduate a year early, but I'm trying to gather information to weigh how many college pre reqs she can knock off for free... Vs getting an AA transfer degree for cheap/free... Vs signing up for a 3+3 law degree.
By the end of her HS Jr yr, she will have 18 college credits done... With at least another 18 paid free. May have her take the minimum HS courses to Max her GPA and go to town on pre reqs.

If she doesn't go to a 4 year school she's gonna miss out on a lot of life experiences like this.

Building on Pardner’s comment, I’d strongly advise a major in a physical science, like biology chem or physics etc and pad it with poly sci and philosophy and some history. She especially needs to understand how American govt werks and the philosophy behind its foundation. A few business courses would also be prudent.
My experience is that a degree in a physical science is an advantage with admissions types. And if she can do that shit, the other coursework I mentioned will be easy by comparison
Avoid any major ending in “studies” at all costs.
FWIW philosophy while derided is invaluable. If you can’t think critically and logically you’re fucked.

As someone who took many political science courses enroute to an engineering degree, there was little critical thinking or logic to be found in those courses.

But the key to remember on physical sciences is that it is likely to come with a lower GPA, so if she finishes with a 3.3 she has a chance of getting bonged over someone with an identical LSAT and a 3.8 in Gender Studies, so you have to be judicious and realistic in picking the major. But all things equal, the person with the hard science degree is getting in over the Gender Studies person.

It's dated, but here is a chart of average LSAT by major: www.phil.ufl.edu/ugrad/whatis/LSATtable.html Note that poli sci is pretty low and prelaw is damned near at the bottom. The majors at the top are heavy as fuck in logic and developing actual arguments. Anyway, at the end of the day, study like hell for the LSAT and practice, practice, practice.

Thanks guys. She was previously thinking about being an optometrist, and did well on the Science portion of the ACTs, so science degree is well on the table.
Notsumuch the head and anal though.

At this point any incremental change is basically going to be like going from something nice like barrel strength Oban straight up to Everclear or some shit. Sometimes more technology isn't necessarily better technology and our contempt for nature has to stop at some point.

I can crush a lot A LOT of weed and not get horse stomped but that little gem put me in The Zone PDQ, and a fine zone it is. Speaking of which if I had to do law school over, I'd be more high and less drunk.

Look, I ain't a Ferentz jock eater like SoCal and Thunder, but if I was barred in Iowa, I'd represent the guy pro bono just to fuck this HOA. How fucking long have they been suing him for? Look, retards, you either have a valid HOA at the time the guy moves in or your don't. There is no "agreement to join an HOA" - you either fucking have valid covenants running with the land or you don't. The fact that he'll pay legal fees to toy with these assholes genuinely makes me like him more. I mean, he could just pay a few grand to pave the driveway, but getting your neighbor going full cuck on the record is worth more than the legal fees. "I'm worried that guests of Kurt are going to run over my kids" is some pretty fucking Busch League level bitching. At the end of the day, a new neighbor moves in, you gauge what they are in to. As long as their name doesn't end in "berg" or "stein" you invite them over for some pulled pork you smoked yourself and you'll have a friend for life. And if it does end in "berg" or "stein" then you invite them over for brisket. This shit isn't rocket surgery, people. I live in unincorporated Greenville County. Tell me - if Dabo moved in next to me and I was like "hey Dabo, let's crush brews and smoke some meat" or if I was like "hey Dabo, I'm some jackoff doctor who hates football because I'm a bitch and oh by the way you owe me 9 grand for the fucking driveway" which one do you think Dabo is gonna make life easy on? If you have to go fucking litigate a case either in Eastern Iowa or Upstate Cackalack - do you think you have a fucking chance against the ball coach coming off a big win against Bama (or in Iowa's case, an Outback Bowl win)? No. Absolutely no.

So I've got a good one for the lawyers and also the pretend lawyers. I have a friend who passed the bar in November. However, she was arrested inbetween completing the bar and getting her scores. Now she's unable to get a license to practice because her case is still open (although she plead guilty), and she believe the prosecutor is just holding the case open to be a dick. She's afraid her scores will expire before she is able to actually obtain her license, and all of the cash she spent on the bar exam will have been a waste, saying nothing of the debt she piled up in law school.
Any advice for her?
