As you may or may not recall I am finishing off my bachelors degree online at the U of Iowa. After my spring class I’ll be able to graduate in May.
My current class is a management class and it’s been interesting enough. Doing “group” projects with anyone is tough but doing group projects with 19 and 20 year olds sucks. But my complaint today is about testing and feedback. We will have had 3 tests by the time I’m done. Each test is cumulative and includes information from previous lessons. We just had the second one and the final is in December. After the test the instructor tells students if they want to discuss their tests they need to come to his office. Obviously that’s not going to work for me. Apparently a lot of students on campus take online courses which to me is odd. If I could be in a class in person I think I’d prefer that but whatever. After the second test I wanted to discuss the questions I missed to see if it’s concepts from the previous lesson I missed or the most recent lesson and make sure I understand them as they will be in the final.
He replied back to me to say that there is no way for him to review with me in a “secure” manner because there is no way to prevent me from recording it and compromising the integrity of the exam if he does it online. (Example using something like Skype).
All those cheaters out there!
Anyway he asked if I had any ideas.
I just think this is ridiculous. A student that is distance or not should have a way to discuss testing. For Pete’s sake what if there was a completely ambiguous question you wanted to argue about if you missed it? You can’t because you don’t know if you missed it.
I offered two solutions. One is that he could just call me on my cell phone and discuss the answers. I said if there was a way to record my iPhone calls I’m not aware of that so seems pretty safe. (I mean, I don’t have any new tapes for my hand held tape recorder)
Option 2 was telling him I’d be in Iowa City Saturday for the game and he could meet me at my tailgate near the stadium and go over my test and then we could share a beer or some fireball. I sent that last night and he hasn’t responded yet.
This morning I recalled on one of his 20 minute lectures he mentioned that he no longer drinks so I might had just earned an F for suggesting option 2!

Is he an adjunct or tenure track? If it's the latter and he's not full tell him you are too going to figurative fuck him on his evals if he refuses to discuss the material over the phone. That's some lazy ass bulleit he's giving you.

Wow. Not to read too much into it, but the guy could be a major creeper trying to meet young co-eds in person in a secure (for him environment). Any male with nothing to hide and 3/8ths of a brain would prefer every interaction like that to be taped, the test be damned. At best, the guy is just too lazy to write a new test (but it seems like the integrity could easily be compromised through distance learning) and at worst, shudder.
Is there some sort of dean of distance learning or something like that or are those reserved for important roles like diversity and inclusion? If the guy is such an asswipe that he won't facilitate distance learning, he shouldn't be allowed to run an online class.

Is there some sort of dean of distance learning or something like that or are those reserved for important roles like diversity and inclusion? If the guy is such an asswipe that he won't facilitate distance learning, he shouldn't be allowed to run an online class. He says he writes new questions for each test and if that’s the case I am not sure why it matters then if I see my wrong answers. He is lazy as he does a lot of copy/pasting of notes and doesn’t proofread after. His last update for the group for the second test said something like “if you feel you did poorly don’t worry as you still have the second and the third test as well as other homework to bring up your grade.” So..the same thing he said after the first test. His lectures are just him going over a PowerPoint that he’s made and giving a few more details. Last about 20 minutes. Most of the learning comes from the book. The problem is that that both his lectures and the book are full of terms and their definitions but short on giving real life examples of what those terms mean in the business world. So for example you might learn the business definition of “planning” but you will be tested on something like “as part of his duties as manager Jim is doing this stuff and then this stuff and then more stuff...which of the answers below will be the stuff he does next? And then you get some multiple choice selections of variety of stuff and you have to think about the terms you’ve learned and decide which real life stuff example fits the definition of the term you have learned, like planning for example. Some of the selections are very ambiguous. If I had to pick out the right definition I’d ace it but I know they are trying to get you to think critically however they need to teach more so you can understand the concepts better. As it is, after you take the test using a lock down browser and being filmed while you take it online, you get your grade right away but can’t see what you’ve missed. On both tests so far, a few days afterwards, he ends up giving everyone more points because if there are a number of questions missed by not only everyone but those that did well on the test overall, he feels that probably proves it was a shitty question to start with and you get points. (In order not to compromise the integrity of the test I can barely remember, “stuff” was used instead of real life examples that I can’t remember either) My science classes haven’t been like that at all. I take a test and I see my grades and the answers I got right and wrong. But this is the Tippie college of business and they do things differently.

One time when I was in college, I cheated on an art history test by stealing one of those test booklets from a previous test, filling a page with notes, tearing it out, and then slipping it into the test booklet during the exam.
Have you tried that Ginj?

Have you tried that Ginj? Ummm there is no test booklet Billj. It’s online. They record you while you take the test. Before the test you have to do a 360 with your laptop to show them the room and during the test you can be interrupted to again show the room. Also my professor hasn’t answered my email regarding my suggestions.

Your suggestion obviously planted a seed in his mind and he is now in an alcoholic stupor somewhere, most likely a seedy dive filled with interesting characters of dubious intent. I hope you’re satisfied.

Have you considered blow jobs? What part of distance learning are you tards not getting? The best she can do is show up for the video of her test taking in the nude.

His excuse about being recorded is 100% bogus, there is never anyway to ensure any conversation isn’t being recorded. Does he frisk every student that comes into his office? Does he confiscate phones for office meetings? This is bullshit, I’d go straight to the Dean of Students.

Hey toots, I'm no longer peddling a shitty EHR. I've moved onto an AI company and get unlimited PTO and we have Tito's at the bar in the office.

Kind of a f'd up situation. His non-recording rule is an impossible standard. Today there is zero way to prove you aren't recording even if you were sitting next to him in his office. You could setup a VPN with him to prevent external eavesdropping via the interwebs, but there is nothing to prevent audio/video recording.
Other than that, just try to make it on a Friday... or offer to sign an NDA/release... or escalate it to his boss.
btw, which class?
