Hypothetical here, not looking for legal advice. Lets say you had a child age 6 who was attacked by some old broads yippy piece of shit terrier. The dog attacked several times before it could be brought under control. None of the wounds required stiches, but there were 3 separate small puncture wounds/lacerations, welts, amd swelling on the arms and legs, which necessitated a trip to urgent care for cleaning and a course of antibiotics.
Is this somefin a reasonably intelligent person could handle or would he/she be better served hiring an attorney. I doubt medical bills exceed $500.

You can’t get out of an ER/urgent care with only $500 in charges.

Last month I took my son to the doctor because he was ill with a fever and a cough and that visit cost me over $800 and my insurance paid half

Damages: Pain, suffering, emotional distress (many people develop a phobia of dogs,) scarring, etc. It's basically strict liability in the aforementioned fact scenario. www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/code/351.28.pdfMedical bills are increasingly irrelevant. Many plaintiffs' attorneys don't even submit them to juries anymore because they anchor the jury RE damages.

'Round here, you can call animal control and they'll submit a claim to your insurer for actual damages and if the victim is paid timely, all is well (and basically everyone plays ball with that system for minor stuff). You try to take terrier bites to a jury in South Carolina and you ain't getting jack fuck. The insurer will settle for strike value. $3 grand max. It really depends on where you live. I'd call someone with PI expertise for a free consultation and see what they say.
