The cubs are terrible and this is not an unexpected slide-its just happening later than I thought it would. That is all.

Yet they are still 31 games over .500 and have a 4 1/2 game lead.
they are fine.

The funny thing is, that during this 'slide', they've hardly lost any ground.

The cubs are terrible and this is not an unexpected slide-its just happening later than I thought it would. That is all. And they still lead any NL team you root for by at least 4.5 games...probably more. What does that say about YOUR team?

The cubs ARE my team-I just realize a flawed product when I see it. I don't have the cubbie shades on and think "well gee they still have the lead so everything is just fine."
Instead, I look at the fact the starting pitching has been mediocore (not to mention injured), the bullpen has been a disaster, timeley hitting-I think not, poor defense-check, etc. . . Just b/c the Brewers cannot get out of their own way should not give the Cubs any confidence.
If you can tell me (honestly) that playing the Brewers 6 more times this year with CC and Sheets possibly throwing 4 of the six doesn't concern you then you are either baseball retarded or you don't pay much attention. (Please don't start with the "we beat CC and Sheets in Mke already" or "the year the Sox won it they backed into the playoffs" rhetoric. I have heard them both and only one is marginally relevant).
Remember what the goal here is: WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP-not the warm and fuzzies for making the playoffs 2 years in a row. Good teams with intelligent fan bases don't celebrate making the playoffs (that should be expected). The celebration is ONLY if they WIN the WS-nothing less.
P.S. 86-58=28 not 31 not that that is all that important b/c the lead is indeed 4.5

Sheets and Sabathia both worry me...but you're going to assume the team that's been slumping for the past two weeks is the real team and not the one that has been utterly dominant the entire season? I don't have the Cubbie glasses on. I can't, I live in the heart of Cardinals country. However, to say they are absolutely cooked is maybe the most baseball retarded thing I've heard at this point. There's no reason to think they won't turn this around. They lost last night on a check swing. They've been in nearly every game in this skid. Lou made some really dumb managing moves last night, i.e. Geo trying to bunt with Pie on first and no one out. I find your belief of the Cubs being completely done absolutely without foundation. They've been solid all season long, and are slumping. Tell me why I shouldn't think they'll get it turned around before the playoffs and be a contender for a WS title. I suggest you read this post from Bleed Cubbie Blue from the other day about the past 8 WS champs: www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2008/9/8/609764/remembering-the-past

While the Cubs and Brewers falter, the Astros are coming on. They won't win the division but the wild card is a possibility.

The reason for my apprehension rests on a few things: 1. All of those teams that won the WS had dominant pitching. Are we to believe Zambrano & Harden have kicked the injuries? 2. If not-then do you trust Dempster as your #1, followed by Lilly and Marquis? 3. Match up the 1-2's of each rotation that may make the playoffs and rank them. Where does the cubs 1-2 rank on that list? 4. Double Play Lee 5. Many teams have a flawed bullpen and what earlier was an advantage the Cub had is no longer the case (again this puts more strain on the starters).
Look the NL is bad and the Cu should get to the playoffs and then who knows-but the most recent history suggests this team will fold like a cheap suit when the going gets tough. I would be exstatic if the cub won it all I just am not confident in it.

All your concerns have developed in the last few games and there's not a single piece of evidence that suggests it will continue. Z is scheduled to be back on Saturday, Harden tomorrow night...and his skipped start had been planned for a while.
What I'm saying to you Leon is don't freak out and don't think they're going to collapse. I realize a lot of history says they will, but fuck history.
This is 2008, not 2006, not 2003, not 1989 or 1998 or 1984. The only year that matters is this year.
I think Z and Harden will be healthy, and as such, I believe they are the best 1/2 combo in baseball. Period.
So, I'll take Dempster/Lilly as the 3/4 against any other 3/4 in the majors as well.
What I'm saying Leon is that there isn't a single fatal flaw anywhere on this team. The offense hasn't been clicking lately, but we've seen it recover throughout the season, and I see no reason to think it won't do it again.

Zambrano and Harden a better 1-2 than Webb and Haren? Sabathia and Sheets?

Yep. I think Harden is the most talented pitcher in all of MLB, and thought that while he was with Oakland.
And I'd take Z over Haren.
Sorry Mr. Wiley. I know this flys in the face of your anti-Cubs beliefs.

Mr. Soul: Harden is maybe in the top 10 pitchers in MLB-and that is a big maybe. Be that as it may he has done exceptionally well since coming to the NL. However, the "rest" he is on now was only scheduled a long time ago in the revisionist history world of the cubs (unless of course they predicted he would be unable to pitch at this point in time-recall the Pinella statement-If he (Hardin) was able to pitch he would be-that was in response to q's about Hardin's status. Then later Hardin himself came out and said he was unable to pitch. So, this rest is either an amazing coincidence or as per usual the Cubs brass is full of shit.
Further, I agree with you about not looking to the past-to an extent. What occurred in say '85 or even in the Crusty Baker yrs doesn't matter; however, a team that has many of the same pieces as last years and poo'd in their shorts in the playoffs is of some importance and questioning this team while using last yr's as some sort of tool is of some import.

I just love the fact that the Dodgers will be playing the Cubs in the first round of the playoffs. Dodgers are playing loose and have nothing to lose. The Cubs are tight and have a 100 year hex hanging over them.
