I'd like to see what we could get for Soriano. He's explosive, offensively, but he's usually injured at least a month out of the season, and dude has been choking during the playoffs. Not saying they should axe him, but maybe shop him around a bit.

I agree. He strikesout way too much. I don't like that he bats leadoff. I wouldn't be heartbroken if the Cubs shopped him around.

And a rightfielder that can actually hit the ball. Fukudome needs some work.

Not saying they should axe him, but maybe shop him around a bit. That contract we signed him to makes him damn near untradeable. I just don't think he's fit for the leadoff position. Here are the positions that we need to look at this offseason, in my view: Shortstop, 2B and CF Go get a great shortstop, and make Theriot your back up. That means Cedeno is gone. Is DeRosa your everyday 2B, or do we make a real push for Brian Roberts this year? I say let Fukudome and Pie fight it out in Centerfield. If Fuku wins, trade Pie. Finally, go get a top tier right fielder. I know Abreu is on the market, and I would not mind seeing him in RF at Wrigley. These views echo those on a few Cubs blogs I've seen today...and Goat Riders had another idea that I think I'm keen on: Moving Derek Lee out of the three spot. Move him to either the 2 spot or the 6 spot. He's not a middle of the order kind of guy. Period. A-Ram should be in the 3 hole. Also, I'm a big fan of the Harden signing. Thoughts?

I don't pay much attention to the business side of baseball, so I wasn't awrare of Soriano's contract. I agree with about everything you say except for Theriot...I believe he finished the year hitting above .300 (highest on the team?). Defensively, probably average to slightly below, but I still like him there. D-Lee needs to be shaken up. Disappointing year, overall...so I'd have no problem moving him in the order. I'm anxious to see how Hoffpauir looks next year...I think he'll eventually turn into a role-player off the bench. Ward, no matter how good a guy he is, was not the lefty bat we had hoped for.

Agreed. He can get on a hot streak, or conversely, he can get on a really cold streak, like last week and others throughout the season as i recall. Plus, let's get someone in left that will actually chase down a ball and catch it. His defense is pathetic. I'd like to see what we could get for Soriano. He's explosive, offensively, but he's usually injured at least a month out of the season, and dude has been choking during the playoffs. Our friend, a bartender here in Des Moines, informed me last night of a trade rumor involving the Cubs and Yanks
The rumor goes:
Carlos Zambrano for Alex Rodriguez. Straight up.
He said that a regular at the bar, spends a lot of time around team clubhouses for some reason.
According to this fella; He overheard some of the players discussing it.
Its very interesting. An infield of Aramis, A-Rod, DeRosa and D-Lee would be rather potent. Of course we would want to know who pays the remainder of A-Rods $300 million contract.
I know that we cann't put any faith in a rumor like this; it gave me something to think about why I finished my beer.
Would you make this trade?

I don't think I'd like the trade. Although Big Z is over-emotional and unpredictable at times, the last thing we need is another 'All Star' that completely chokes in the playoffs.
Plus for some reason I've never liked A-Rod. Of course the moment he became a Cub that would change...

No. Way. A-Rod, while a fine, fine ballplayer, is what? 33, 34 now? Z is 27 or 28. There is always a higher premium on pitching than on position players.
I'd love to have A-Rod, but not at the expense of Z.

Ahh yes, the Des Moines clubhouse hanger arounder. The best source of information out there.
If I were the Cubs, I'd take A-Rod for Z in a heartbeat. Z's shelf life is probably shorter than A-Rod's. A-Rod is the best player in his generation. Z is alright, but he's not the best pitcher of his generation or anything. A-Rod plays everyday, Z plays every 5th game. Plus, once Prior and Wood get back to 100%, the Cubs will have the most formidable rotation in the history of baseball. Prior will get back to Chicago and be awesome and they'll move Wood back into the rotation, and you'll have Harden, Dempster and Marshall, it will be unreal. I've heard that LaTroy Hawkins is looking to come back to Chicago, too.

Wood, Prior, Maddux (younger version), Sutcliffe...we'll exhume Rod Beck - we're going to win the series baby!!!!!!!!!! On a side note, f**k Steve Trachsel.

He was not lights out. We spent too much money on Fukudome. He's not what people said he'd be. Trade that bastard. Put Dero in RF and Fontenot at 2nd base. We don't need to sign anyone else. We already spent $300M last offseason

I think 'ol Stukatt was kidding when referring to Latroy and Alfonconfonconseca. Who was that old guy we had reliever that was sure bet to give up 2+ runs...traded (or released him) to St. Louis....can't remember his name. We need him back.

Jeff Fassero. I swore many a blue streak because of him. A reasonable argument BTR on the Z for A-Rod deal. That's true that a pitchers shelf life is far shorter than a position player, and Z isn't the greatest of his generation by a long shot, but I think I would still rather have Z.
Proven pitching is always harder to find than a solid position player.

Thank you! Fassero... my god. I remember thinking we had to have some AAA pitchers better than him.
I also remember a few years back playing against the Rockies...we were down by a couple of runs and Fassero comes in (I think the Rockies were the last team he played for). I instantly celebrated, and voila, he gave up the tying and go ahead runs.
