www.newyorker.com/talk/comment/2008/11/03/081103taco_talk_hertzberg...On October 12th, in conversation with a voter forever to be known as Joe the Plumber, Obama gave one of his fullest summaries of his tax plan. After explaining how Joe could benefit from it, whether or not he achieves his dream of owning his own plumbing business, Obama added casually, “I think that when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.” McCain and Palin have been quoting this remark ever since, offering it as prima-facie evidence of Obama’s unsuitability for office. Of course, all taxes are redistributive, in that they redistribute private resources for public purposes. But the federal income tax is (downwardly) redistributive as a matter of principle: however slightly, it softens the inequalities that are inevitable in a market economy, and it reflects the belief that the wealthy have a proportionately greater stake in the material aspects of the social order and, therefore, should give that order proportionately more material support. McCain himself probably shares this belief, and there was a time when he was willing to say so. During the 2000 campaign, on MSNBC’s “Hardball,” a young woman asked him why her father, a doctor, should be “penalized” by being “in a huge tax bracket.” McCain replied that “wealthy people can afford more” and that “the very wealthy, because they can afford tax lawyers and all kinds of loopholes, really don’t pay nearly as much as you think they do...”

IF the point you are making is that they both do it and IF it is true that McCain actually said it, they are both wrong.

The point is that the hysterical claims of "Socialism!" from the Right are just that - hysterical. Also, misleading, inaccurate and incorrect.

McCain did say it. He's a fiscal liberal and deserves to be walloped in the election to restore a sense of balance in the Force.
The funny thing was in the clip, a room full of college kids actually disagreed with his stance and showed their stance. The same room today would have received a standing ovation. It's funny, though, these college kids who are so pro Obama are gonna be the ones who really take it in the keister in the job market over the next few years. Yeah, higher taxes on the rich and corporations coupled with an erosion of state-level right to work laws is gonna free up the labor market. We will have a lost generation of kids, just like France and Japan have had.

I'm hoping "the lost generation" will be directed toward a WPA-style of program that focuses on manufacturing and manual labor positions that will rebuild America's interstates, bridges, rail system......This country's infrastructure needs to be updated to the 21st century and instead of farming these needs out to China, India, and other foreign lands.......put Americans to work, pay them a solid wage, fine and/or close down companies that hire illegal aliens all while re-building America's infrastructure

You will not get benefits and pay will be low. You also will not be able to get one of the contracts because you will not be able to check the right boxes regarding gender or ethnicity on the form to bid for the contracts. Oh wait, that's our world of small, disadvantaged government contracting today, I'm sure the Dem supermajority will equalize the playing field and honor the plain language of the 14th Amendment.

And it will make a handful of government contractors wealthy at the taxpayers' expense.

Of course... After November 4th, 95% of the states that pay more than they receive will be Democratic... and it will be close to a split for the states that receive more than they give.....
