In watching the news over the weekend (after the Iowa thrashing) bowl predictors say Iowa will go to the Champs Sports Bowl. Now, being we didn't go to a bowl last year, and we should be happy we're going to a bowl, I don't think we should go to the Champs Sports Bowl. I know we're 5th in Big Ten, and that could land us in Orlando for that bowl, I say Alamo bowl at the worst, but hoping for Outback. MSU and NU are ahead of us, and beat us, but bowl reps can choose other teams below their place in the Big Ten, and considering the Hawkeyes have a great fan following, and typically sell out their bowl ticket allotments, I can only assume that we'll at least get the Alamo. I know alot rides on the Oregon/Oregon State game, but what say the board??

I think this year, given the economy and fewer expected travelers, I would imagine the bowls will be looking at which team will bring the most money. Northwestern is not that team. I don't imagine we'll jump MSU, but I'd be surprised if we didn't jump NU.
Plus the Champs bowl doesn't work well with my schedule.

This year, Champs picks ahead of Alamo, so Champs is the #4 B10 slot and Alamo is #5, meaning we are slotted ahead of NU.
The big question, and I think it is a coin toss right now, is whether we will jump MSU for Outback in the event OSU goes to Capital One. They said on the game on Saturday night that representatives from every B10 bowl affiliate (other than Rose and Motor City) were at the game in the Dome. My guess is the Outback and Capital One reps weren't just hanging out in Minneapolis taking in the rays. The Outback reps obviously will want to pick the team that will travel best, and I think that will be the Hawks. We are trending up with 3 straight wins, including a great W over PSU and a blowout over Minnesota. We had a 36 game or something home sellout streak going into the Purdue game (we didn't sell that one out) and our fans seem to travel really well. If Outback could get an Iowa-LSU rematch of the Cap One Bowl from a few years ago, I guarantee they would sell their allotment. If they have a MSU South Carolina crapfest, they will have over 10,000 empty seats and a bunch of proles who cannot afford hotel rooms descending on their town. I think they know this.
Remember back in 2005 - Michigan had a better B10 record than we did AND beat us head to head, and we still jumped them for Outback - and that was freaking Michigan. I think we definitely have a shot at the Outback.

I agree with you BTR. I think we definitely have a shot at the Outback, and that's what I'm really hoping for. Also, if PSU gets picked for a different BCS game than the Rose, (not likely, but possible) than OSU will get Rose, and that will almost solidify our chances of the Outback bowl.
I know we can outsell MSU, which is a big seller for the bowl reps. With NU, well that goes without saying...

I think we are headed back to Tampa.

Most likely Tampa - but the predictions of us playing South Carolina doesn't excite me too much. I know it's a more prestigious bowl, but the thought of playing Oklahoma State or Missouri in the Alamo Bowl would be a pretty cool match up.

If the Capitol One can take us, they will. Their rep could not have put the writing on the wall any more obviously with a hot pink marker after the the Minnesota demolition.
Any bowl that can take us WILL take us. It will be Orlando or Tampa.

BTR - actually its the Alamo's turn first this year, 2009 the Champs gets first.
There is no way, read zero chance, the Hawkeyes slip past the Outback, IMO. They are the hottest team in the Big Ten and the Outback reps LOVE Iowa. LOVE Iowa. If OSU gets an at-large BCS bid, MSU will likely get the CapOne and Iowa would get the Outback over NW easily. However, if OSU slips to the CapOne, you can be fairly certain that Iowa will hop over BOTH MSU and NW for that bid. Worst case scenario is San Antonio, best case is Orlando. Most likely case is Tampa. Those are your 3 choices for all intents and purposes.

The Cap One rep was creaming himself talking about Iowa after the Gopher slaughter, and Iowa's win over Penn State (combined with MSU's ass-kicking at PSU's hands) gives the Cap One "cover" to pick Iowa. I'll say it again: The first bowl with a chance to take Iowa WILL take Iowa. If Oregon beats Oregon State and tOSU goes BCS, book Orlando. "You have to look at the momentum of the Iowa team and they really have that momentum going these final games," said Sean Gothier, a selection committee member for Florida Citrus Sports, which represents both the Capital One and Champs Sports Bowls. "You look for a team moving in the right direction and obviously, Iowa is."media.www.dailyiowan.com/media/storage/paper599/news/2008/11/24/Sports/Capital.One.Outback.Bowls.Show.Interest.In.Hawkeyes-3559898.shtmlYou think the Cap One sent a rep up there because of the balmy weather?

I would love to play Georgia in the CapOne bowl with a head to head match up of two of the best RB's in the country.
I would put money on Greene winning that match up as well.

Agreed about not much excitement to play South Carolina. Not many would find that interesting.
I echo the thoughts of wanting to play someone like a Georgia, Missouri or Okie State. Is playing Nebraska out of the realm of possibility?

I am thinking outback bowl. Would love to see us play Georgia. If the Big twelve only gets two BCS shots, where does the third team play since they miss out? Could we play Texas Tech in the Alamo? That would be a great matchup.

Iowa's pass defense isn't that great. I don't think I want to play Texas Tech with their ariel attack.

Got to admit, I forgot all about the Cotton Bowl. A TT matchup is not going to happen. It would have been fun though, as a team that has to go one dimensional on the attack will often flounder. We could do that to them. Also, with our running ground and pound game, TT would have a difficult time stopping us, keeping that offense off the field. I am less optimistic about the Florida scenario and see us more than likely in the Alamo bowl. Maybe a grudge match against Mizzou? They dropped us a few years back and we owe them. Would love to see that matchup as well, especially if we show up ready to play and not lethargic after being off for a few weeks. Either way, I get to see them play on the TV. That is good news.

When have we played Mizzou recently? What I remember, is their coach backed out of playing us a couple years ago, as did Nebraska. The scenario looks like this: the Oregon/Oregon State game is big for us. If OU wins, it helps Ohio State get into a BCS, which moves us to at least Outback, maybe Capital One. If Oregon State wins, then Ohio State will likely go to Capital One with us going to Outback or Alamo.

The grudge match I was referring to was due to them blowing us off. I am hoping for Florida, but I see us realistically playing in San Antonio. That is not a bad deal either. I wanted to play Georgia though, got a coworker who is a big fan of theirs.

For overall atmosphere, San Antonio is pretty hard to beat. Everybody is right there by the Riverwalk for the entire time, you can walk everywhere...we had a fantastic time in 2001. Part of me hopes they go back (a friend got married the last time, plus I was sick anyway so it was just as well I didn't go down). It was great walking along the Riverwalk and suddenly hear 1000s of Iowa fans singing the fight song.
Florida bowls are great, but the fact that people and events are spread out so far takes away from the experience, imo.

I too enjoy San Antonio, and the Riverwalk and the Alamo and all that, but the Outback Bowl is a better bowl, bigger payout. I'd rather go to Outback, but will take Alamo.
Predictions now indicate Outback Bowl against possibly Steve Spurrier and South Carolina. Not sure if I'm too intrigued about playing South Carolina.

All of the bowl money is split and distributed to all Big 10 teams evenly. Iowa will get as much money as PSU and Indiana.

80% Outback 20% Alamo
I'll be happy with either. Been to Outback/Tampa twice. Never been to San Antonio for a bowl game.

Who cares if you havent? The Outback is on New Year's Day. Don't have to take a day off of work to watch it, and it's the first game on that day. It's better than the Alamo bowl.

Is playing Nebraska out of the realm of possibility? I like the potential of Iowa v. Nebrasky, but the Outback is a really nice bowl, and my wife's parents have a house near Naples. Plus, the "hawks v. cocks" has an interesting, albeit disturbing, ring to it.

We won't get a shot at them regardless of destination (Tampa/Orlando).

If I'm not mistaken the Alamo is on Monday December 29th at 7 or 8 pm and is the only bowl game that night. So if you want to watch college football that night it is either the Alamo Bowl or nothing. It could actually have a larger veiwing then the Outback since other games will start before the Outback is over. I would rather see them in the Outback on Jan 1st just from a prestige stand point of another Jan bowl though.

It's another January bowl game. That's a goal at the beginning of the year, to make a January bowl game. I'll certainly take the Alamo bowl, but I'd just rather play a SEC team than a Big 12 team.
