I could definately see that. The only people who have a need for them are people who want to max out their home theatre. The resolution is nice but not much of an improvement over DVD, especially if you have a DVD player that "upconverts" to 1080 resolution. The audio really isn't any better, pretty hard to top dolby digital 5.1 unless you have the ears of a hound and the budget of Bill Gates. Also, who in the hell wants to pay $30 or more for a movie? I can see it going the way of the laserdisc. Sony sure had alot riding on the Bluray format and considered it was their ace up the sleeve in the videogame battle, so far that isn't playing out so well and I don't see it getting better. If anyone is thinking of whether to get a PS3 or 360, I would definately reccomend the 360 (I have owned both).

I was considering going Blu-ray this Christmas, until I saw the price of the movies and saw what an upconvert dvd player could do.
Standing pat now and just waiting for more HD video on demand from my satellite provider.
Also, Wii does just fine in my house, my girls don't demand high graphics, just fun games, and the only time I play it is when the gang is over for some cocktails....can't wait for RockBand2 to come out for Wii next week.

My two cents...
I love my BluRay. Trust me..watching a BR movie on an 1080i or 1080p HDTV with 5.1 surround sound will blow the doors off of any upscaling of a regular DVD.
With that said, I do see a day, probably sooner than later, when digital downloads will replace BR. When they can economically stream 1080p-quality movies to save to your computer or TV, that'll be the beginning of the end...sort of like iTunes/iPod technology replacing CD's.
But until then, boy do I like my BR set up!

This thread is actually damn good timing as I had been pondering investing in a home theater system. I had been hearing that this blue ray deal was best thing since sliced bread and now it is gonna go by the wayside? Do you happen to know if that article is just one guy's opinion?...or is the blue ray going away the common belief? We got any subject matter experts out there that can steer me the right direction on a solid home theater from the ground up?

There's actually several articles out there. I found the zdnet story through a Wall Street Journal blog.

That guy is smoking crack. Dark Knight shattered previous Blu Ray sales record and the players are flying off the shelves.
Blu Ray isn't going anywhere for awhile and anybody that says you can't see the difference between Blu Ray and upconverted DVD's are plain crazy it isn't even a close.
The whole Xbox vs. PS3 debate all depends on what you want to use the system for. If you want one of the best Blu Ray players on the market along with a gaming system then a PS3 (and that is leaving out all of the other things the PS3 can do) is the way to go. If you just want to play games then go with the Wii or Xbox.

Only about 1/3 of Dark Knight is in resolution much better than DVD, (the portions that were used for IMAX). If you watch the movie on Blu Ray you will see they have it letterboxed for alot of the dialogue scenes, the cityscape scenes and action sequences are where the Blu Ray shines in that movie.
Also, Planet Earth is awesome on Blu Ray.

To say otherwise is just buying into the upscaling manfacturer's nonsense. Plus, the 2008- BR's are encoded with 7.1 surround sound. Looks and sounds just extraordinary.

You are right about BR being superior, but DVD upcoverts still look pretty good given the limited selection of Blu Ray movies at Blockbuster. The nice thing about Blu Ray too is that they upconvert DVDs. That way if you have to settle for DVD it still looks pretty sharp. My TV is 1080i and rear projection so it isn't quite the setup that you have. Thinking about making an upgrade pretty soon though. Dolby Digital kicks ass too, especially in video games. Playing shooters you can tell exactly where your enemies are just by listening to which speaker the sound is coming out of. How sweet is that?

I'll also add.....there IS a difference, a noticeable one, between 1080i and 1080P.
I used to poo-poo the notion until I upgraded to a 1080p about a year ago. Afterall, they both supported the 1920x1080 pixel resolution...right?
Was the 1080i with BR decent? Of course.
But the 1080p with its progessive displaing, coupled with BR is eye-popping. Much better.

And for the record upconverting DVDs looks nothing like BluRay, not even close... and if it is, your TV sucks ass.

You tools are focusing so hard on the trees that you are missing the forest.
Of course you guys know all the ins and outs of BR, as you are big fans of it.
The article is more addressed to Joe the Plummer, or more aptly, about Joe the Plummer's wife, or father, or neighbor. Much like my wife, parents, and neighbors, they don't "get" HD, and probably never will. They like it, but do not see the benefits of spending 5x the $$ for a BR players, or 2x the $ for a BR disc....hell, I get shit once a month for the extra $20 for HD on Dish Network....and for all of them, upconvert would work just fine.
IMHO, Sony is screwing the pooch on BR, especially this holiday season. They really should have put out a nice BR player for $150 and had a bunch of $15 BR disks, instead of keeping things priced out of many budgets during a deep recession.
By the time they get rolling, HD video on demand will be more accepted.

BD will depend on how many people go the HD route. Some people will still stickw ith CRTs and VNEVER switch.
Those that want HD and want it now will go BD. That's the facts. Regardless of the price or availablilyt (price has been going down, product line is increasing exponentially).
BD isn't main stream and it likely won't be... DVDs will be around for a long, long time. But HD VOD isn't going to be anymore accepted than BD. Both are luxuries.
