The Apple Basket restaurant in Montezuma has recently closed. Some of the People on this board will know of this place. (Mostly ppl from Monte and Grinnell) and i guess those people are who I am posting this for.
This is really a shame. It was the only "proper" place to go out to eat in the great town of Montezuma. The guy that ran the place was a real nice guy, who worked like crazy to make the place sucessful.
The restaurant gave High school kids a place to earn cash and employed people in the community with primary or secondary jobs. On the weekends it had a "Grill Your Own Steak" area and had specials during the week, like "mexican night" and so on.
It’s hard for any business to make it in small town Iowa, especially a Restaurant. It amazes me that The Apple Basket made it for more the 15 years, and then it was forced to close. It’s a shame.
EDIT: Can anyone give me an update on how "Lonski's" pub on main street in Grinnell is doing? I havent been in there for a while.

I heard about this...why the hell did it close? I figured they had to be in the black, even being in the small town of Monte. That place seemed like it was always busy.
That was my first job...dishwasher for the Apple Basket.

I dont know, Mom said something to the line of "not able to make money"
She was kinda of mad. That was her "second job" for 12+ years.
I dont know how busy it was during the weeks, Maybe the owner just got sick of the long ass hours he had to work day in and day out.

I'll ask my brother about Lonski's. He frequented it a lot. A guy I knew in HS opened and ran it. Too bad. I remember when it was JD's. It's an iconic spot for a restaurant in Grinnell

Took one of my very first dates there... Oh c'mon...more like your ONLY date. How was the trip back to the homestead? I was down in Grinnell at my mom's new pad on Christmas Eve. She's in love with it there.

It was good. Hit up Pagliai's Friday and then a few bars. Grandma ended up calling everything off on Sunday so we left a little early. Solid trip overall.
