I'm sure you guys have heard me rant about how crappy my building is but if anyone is looking for a place to live there is a vacant apartment down the hall as of today.
I woke up this morning around 9 to the sound of police sirens outside. They stopped right in front of my building and I heard a little chatter in the hallway but didn't really think twice about it.
About 20 minutes later I heard my building manager (a sweet old lady) crying hysterically in the hallway right outside my door. There is this guy who had been a lifelong drug addict that nobody had seen for several days who lived down the hall and I think it is safe to say that he died of a drug overdose. The smell in the hallway after they opened his door was pretty putrid and I decided to get my ass to work.
I wasn't suprised by all of this in the least and know that the guy was facing an eviction notice and he was a pretty big piece of shit anyways.
Pretty strange way to start the week no matter what.

I would suggest that if anyone should be looking for an apartment, it would be you. WFT?

I would suggest that if anyone should be looking for an apartment, it would be you. WFT? I getting out of that shithole on March 1. It has definately been an interesting stay while living there. At lease it has been cheap enough that I paid off all of my debt and still managed to have some good times over the last couple of years.

It's time to move on up in the world Twine. You wouldn't want BTR to think you're one of the Proles would you?

I remember when I lived in my shithole apartment over off 29th and Cottage Grove that no matter how much I vacuumed, the carpet was still "gritty" and I had to wear my shoes or socks at ALL times. It was pretty gross.

The carpet isn't too bad, its that kind of carpet that has about 5 shades of brown and gray all mixed together so you cannot stain it unless you spill some paint or red Koolaid on it. I have enough decent stuff in my pad that it doesn't really seem all that bad. Still, I can't wait to leave it and crawl my way slowly out of proledom. Some of the people that live in my building are big enough losers I don't think you would even want to give them a title as honorable as prole. For example, the dude that died this morning (or sometime over the last week) hasn't worked the whole time he has lived there and is probably getting help from the government for being an ex-con and too "mentaly unstable" to hold a job due to his drug dependence. This is the same guy who was standing in the hall one day when I was walking in from scraping my windshield and told me he wanted to "Keep me warm". What a sick fucking bastard. That and he was attracting all sorts of losers to the building to sell to and provide drugs to him. It never bothers me to see people like this thinned from the herd.

A Friend of mine has a couple of 4 plexs. Well he gets the heating bill from Dec (he pays for the heat in the hallways and common areas) and it's 3 times higher then it was the previous year. Well he finds out later that one of the ladies that was living their would crank up the heat in the hallway and then just leave her door open so she wouldn't have to pay for heat.

Twine, dude commited suicide somehow. Call doesn't say how, but apparently he did us all a favor by the way you talk.

I was kind of wondering if you might be able to shed a little light on the situation. I know the police showed up around 9 am and I'm sure there are limitations on what kind of info you can release but do you have any idea how long he may have been in there? It smelled like ass when I left for work.

Call just says "obvious death" and suicide, so I'm guessing he was probably there a while.

Pretty impressive list of accomplishments and achievements. A very highly pedigreed young man. Damn shame.

Your compassion is overwhelming Twine. Unemployed Drug User Ex Con Gay: Does it just take one of the criteria above to no longer deserve to live or is there like a minimum combination (say like 2 or 3 of the above)? Just curious what your acceptable standards would be for someone who shouldn't be "thinned from the herd".

Well, I don't wish death on anyone. I could care less if someone were gay (although flamers annoy me). If you are unemployed I have sympathy for you as long as you are trying to get a job, if you aren't trying to do anything to better your situation I have no pity. I have no problem agains using drugs if you use responsibly. I don't consider being an ex-con an admirable quality, but if you have learned from your lessons and are making an honest effort to better youself then you are redeemed in my eyes (depending on your charges).
If people who fit the lesser of these qualities are living and doing absolutely nothing to have a positive effect on society then I don't really see what purpose they serve. Why have compassion and want to help someone who isn't trying to help themselves?
I do feel bad for the guy and his family but I don't see his passing as some overly tradgic event. Sorry if I have offended you, my good friend.

You haven’t offended me sir. It takes quite a bit to actually offend me. I just think your statement that “It never bothers me to see people like this thinned from the herd.” is a bit on the cruel side. You can call me a dirty hippie or whatever, but I think human life is pretty special and it always saddens me to see people die before their natural times. Even those society deems as “Losers” or “Parasites”. I just don’t feel that any of us are in a position where we should judge whether another person is/was worthy of living or not. Not trying to break your balls, but its something I’m fairly passionate about. I think people, as a whole, put way too little value on human life. This is a big reason our world is as fucked up as it is. Love and compassion really can make the world a better place. <Getting off my soapbox>

Sorry if I have offended you, my good friend. My only questions are - Is the hallway "moment" the only interaction you've had with the dude? How much of the other items you list on his pedigree do you know to be true? How much is hearsay? (I don't have any skin in the argument... but you should understand the this guy's life isn't totally within the time you knew him) For a somewhat related story about a friend I had growing up ending in a somewhat similar way. We had been friends off an on bince we were in 2nd grade, took some classes together at the U, etc. We even shared an apartment for a while in Indianapolis when he needed to get away from IC. During the time he lived with me, he began pissing me off because his sole existence seemed to be smoking weed. So I was going away with my girlfriend for a weekend & said "Get a job or get out by the time I'm back" --- he left. We met up a few times after that, but didn't keep as close... I then get a call from his sister a few years later that he was found dead. It turns out that some dude he invited over to smoke with, liked his collection of guns & other expensive collectibles --- so he shot him in the face 2x, where he was found two weeks later. Sad & tragic story, some would call him a piece of shit or loser (which may or may not have been accurate at that moment)... but I'm absolutely sure he positively touched the lives of others.

No, I had talked to the guy several times. He was just fucked up, plain and simple. He kept calling me Chris too after I had corrected him about 10 times. Pretty much everyone that came to his place was there for drugs. He would always leave these stupid notes on his door for everyone to see that were always dramatic and plain stupid. That and if the managers gave him any crap he would kick holes in the wall, which is why they were evicting him. He had slammed his door in the face of our 75+ year old lady manager who is a very nice and sweet old woman. Basically, the guy was just a piece of shit who lost his way quite a while and had very little hope of getting it back.
Sorry to hear about your friend, too. That is a truly messed up story.

It seems that dude had some problems --- and the chemical additives didn't seem to help him any.
