Got word today that they're closing our Peoria offices 3/31, and 65 of us are out on our asses. I don't drink much, but I need a beer.

That sucks SoCal. In all seriousness.....what is your plan of attack? I assume you have marketable and transferable skills, yes?
What's your area of expertise?

This is terrible news. In what is the spirit of old Iowa way of everyone in town chipping in and helping, please let us know if you need anything.

When I started with this company in 2000, I was to setup and run the extended warranty program and deal with the insurance underwriter. However, starting in late 2000 - they had what would become the first of 7 rounds of layoffs. Each time there was a layoff I was assigned the duties of some of those laid off. -----until I'm at the bastardized job state I'm in now. If I had to narrow myself to something... I'd say office automation/efficiency. I'm a self-taught, then MS Office "Master" certified (Excel, Access, Word, etc.) that builds spreadsheets/reports & databases for whatever the need is. --- Here it was mostly creating spreadsheets/databases for people that didn't know anything, then making them feel good because they could click a button to execute a macro I built... combined with graphic / html / marketing / print room / customer service escalations / corporate regulatory filings / running a print room... and general account & project management duties. (oh, and I drive/drove a forklift when the warehouse needed help) So I retained the "Program Manager" title, but did whatever was needed. -and still made the time to frequent numerous blogs/message boards...

Are you definitely in that group Socal? Yep. Everyone here in Peoria is gone by 3/31 (except for two that will stay until 5/31 tearing everything down) --- and they were letting some go at the headquarters in CT. ------------ .....I needs me some bailout & run of the mill socialism

I needs me some bailout & run of the mill socialism Amen - I hope it makes it into your mailbox. I hope you land on your feet, but at the same time, I hope you don't land in some gov't job that doesn't let you throw the smack down on the Wasteland. God bless the private sector.

Sorry to hear that SoCal. Good luck. Is moving an option? Necessity always modifies plans... The Mrs. is trying to finish her Dental Hygiene degree, so for the most part we're stuck until May 2010 --- but we've been planning on moving to the IC area or Mini-soda when she was done. We'll follow the path with the most opportunities. ---A good thing I've got going on this front is her best friend is in a similar situation... where her husband is moving to another state to work while she finishes school. So that's not outside my wife's line of thought.

Like everyone else, really sorry to hear that. Sucks when you have a fam on top of it.
The company I work for has some openings but it would require relocating to DSM -- sounds like that wouldn't work well with your wife's schooling.
You're not the only one. A neighbor of mine had his position eliminated from Wells Fargo not too long ago and am trying to get him on here.
I'll keep my ears open.

Really sorry Socal. I hope things work out for you.
Unfortunately, being in the banking industry, I cannot help finding you a position, nor would you probably want to be in this industry right now, for that matter.

Sorry to hear that too, Socal. Hopefully you will find something soon, or at least until you severance runs out (considering you are lucky enough to have any).
Hopefully none of the rest of us will be joining you hunting but it wouldn't suprise me.
Good luck with your job search. If I hear of anything here in the cold D or elsewhere I'll let you know.

If you are available to move that opens up alot for you, but it sounds like your stuck for the foreseeable future. You got the smarts and the skills you won't be out of work long. It sounds like you are really good with computers, are you good with hardware too or more the software side of it? When my wife was out of work she did some stuff on her own, kind of like freelance if you will. She put an add in the paper offering computer lessons, and to fix them. She did ok until this other chick with a degree in computer science came in.
I would love to learn this stuff, "I'm a self-taught, then MS Office "Master" certified (Excel, Access, Word, etc.) that builds spreadsheets/reports & databases" and would probably pay to do so.

You'll be good I am sure. And the government job doesn't mean you have to stop surfing. You just gotta be a little more careful. Or go work for the National Science Foundation. Smart guys with computer skills and a work ethic are always employable. Use it as an opportunity to get the location you have always wanted. Good luck. I hope you land on your feet smiling.

Even when playing football & wrestling, I couldn't run more than a half mile without dropping a lung and being out of commission for a few days due to asthma. ----------- I'm feeling a bit "better" though... there are some decent socialist things here in Illinois, so we will have free "family" insurance and 26+ weeks of unemployment, etc.

You're kind of a big guy, are you good with numbers? I could see you being one of those IRS shakedown guys or something. I think the IRS is always hiring.
