I may raise the ire of some on here, but I'll say it anyways:
Signing Day is so overrated. It's a little creepy how much some grown men fawn over these 17 and 18 year old kids, who have absolutely no guarantee of having successful football careers.
I'm not saying a solid recruiting class doesn't help you, but it sure as hell isn't a guarantee of future success, and I get tired of all the hype surrounding this day.

Ah, it's usually in good fun as long as you KEEP IT IN PERSPECTIVE (the whole 17 and 18 year old kid thing). I follow football recruiting pretty closely. I think it adds another aspect to following the Hawkeyes...being able to see the development of players. It's kind of fun to bring knowledge into a football conversation, such as "watch out for this guy" a year before he has a break out year.

Pretty boring on the Hawkeye front as far as signing day goes, though...

I guess my frustration with this year can be attributed to the Missouri fans around here. They seem to all be convinced they're on their way to being a Texas or Oklahoma, and all it takes is just one good recruiting class, like the one they potentially have lined up today, to put them over the top.
Does that sound familiar at all?
Of course, whenever I point things like that out, I'm told I'm crazy, the Big 10 isn't a good measuring stick for the powerhouse that is the Big 12...blah blah blah.
Fuck Missouri fans. Ok, not all of them, but just the loudmouths that believe they know everthing.

They're class isn't even all that impressive on paper.
I will say this, though. The Big 12 North is just waiting for a power to step up. I thought Nebraska would re-emerge...and maybe they will eventually.

Well, to hear them talk about it, the kid they got from the STL area...Sheldon Williams I think, will be the best football player in the historyoftheuniverseanywhereandever.
I'm so tired of the fellatio that goes on between the media around here and the football team. I don't think it was EVER this bad in Iowa, but maybe I'm just remembering the media coverage through rose colored glasses.

I think a lot has to do with the fact that they have been so bad for so long the writers are actually happy they are able to write about a team that wins instead of writing about a team that sucks year after year.

Only Missoura fans can get that excited about a class that isn't even remotely close to being in the top 25: rivals100.rivals.com/teamrank.asp?Year=2009&Page=2&PosType=0&Sort=0

Hell, most Big 12 student bodies are functionally retarded. Anybody ever been to Ames, Iowa or Lincoln, Nebraska?

Very good article, the part about when the kid was talking about how watching teh Penn State game cemented his decision to become a Hawkeye reminds you of how important it is to get the marquee games on national television. I hope this kid does well here.

Another thing about signing day that annoys me is how these 17-18 kids (the really "good" ones) are made into superstars by the media before playing a single snap on a college football field. They feel the need to announce their decision on ESPN in front of millions of people. They have their four precious hats all layed out in front of them, pick on up as if they are going to that University, then pull the "psych" card out, put it down and pick up another hat. GROW UP!
