Did he really just sign a new 7-year deal? Whatever happened to the traditional 3 year contract in collegiate athletics? Those gave the coach and administration both reasonable outs if things weren't cool on either side. This is just another example of the pornographic nature of college coach salaries and contracts........I thought these guys were supposed to be teachers.......why not pay them like teachers........$25K a year

You must have missed the part where he was already under contract until 2013 and now it is 2015. Yes it is 7 years but all they did was add 2 years onto his current contract. I don't think it is really that big of a deal. I'm sure there are reasonable outs if things weren't cool on either side.
Also what good would a 3 year deal do? Most players (not all) are in school 4 or 5 years and want to know their coach will be there and a 3 year contract wouldn't do that.

There are not reasonable outs on both sides. The contracts of coaches of most public schools are available on USA Today. I read Ferentz's - it's ridiculous, if the school terminates him without cause (cause is very narrow, having a shitty team is not cause) it has to pay him the full amount. It's pretty one sided. I like the guy but he has definitely used every open coaching opportunity to take a pound of flesh from the Hawks. I'd do the same, but as a guy who loves the Hawks and has seen how quickly a program can go south, I'd prefer a little more flexibility.

They tend to get reviewed every 2 years and then either get extended for another 3 years or the coach/admin plays the "wait and see" in year 3. The most players want to know if their coach will be around for their playing career is true to a point, but in big-time football and basketball it doesn't matter.......as kids and coaches are leaving on a yearly basis with no real commitment to the institution.

Because as of right now that is the only way I see him leaving anytime soon.
