The reason I ask this question is because I am going to San Diego for about a week pretty soon and plan on spending alot of time outside. I don't want to get burnt while I am out there nor do I want to be extremely pasty when going (it is the middle of winter after all). Usually, I think any guy that uses a tanning bed is more or less a douche and laugh at the idea. But, given the circumstances, I was thinking of hitting up a tanning bed for a couple of weeks to get some color before leaving and avoiding getting burnt in the southern California sun. Any thoughts?

Under those circumstances I think it's fine. Pretty lame to just go to the tanning booth for any other reason.
Plus....what chicks are you going to attract with pasty, white skin?

It depends on when you go. San Diego isn't that hot right now.

For a single guy, tanning is fine so long as you go wearing a disguise... a hat and sunglasses is fine but if you're really worried use a fake 'stache or wig also. You wouldn't want anyone to recognize you.

It depends on when you go. San Diego isn't that hot right now. You are right, I thought it would be about 10 or 15 degrees warmer than it will be when I'm out there. Supposedly the average while I'm there is in the upper 60's lower 70's.

Yes, i would tan before any vacation that you are taking where you will be outside the majority of the time.
Vacation is time to be enjoyed and having to worry about getting a sunburn shouldnt be one of your worries. A few trips to the salon will give you decent base that will help keep you from burning.

Twine...San Diego is never (meaning year around) any warmer than high 60's or very low 70's. Even in the middle of summer. If you go inland, then it's another story. It depends on when you go. San Diego isn't that hot right now. You are right, I thought it would be about 10 or 15 degrees warmer than it will be when I'm out there. I don't see a problem with that. It's the guy that goes a few times a week all winter long with no plans for a vacation that has a problem.
Not to mention most of the chicks that go to tanning salons or work there are hot.

Off topic a little but a funny story (okay, to me, probably not you guys). My girlfriend once went tanning with her roommate. Look at my avatar. My gf is Filipino and pretty dark. Her roommate is indian (red dot, not feather) and probably darker. They were drunk. The girls at tanning salon were not impressed.
On topic. I think my brother went to a tanning bed once to try to dry up some bacne. I usually just use sunscreen. Oh, and I've said it before and I'll say it again, fuck this "man card/manliness" shit. If you want to and you are a man, you will do it. If you are worried that it isn't manly, you aren't a man. And if you really want, I'll show you my back hair to prove I'm a man.

The sun isn't that strong out here. Even you midwesterners outta survive without hitting the tanning salon first. Trust me, you won't be alone in your paleness. I drive by the Hotel Del Coronado everday and there are plenty of pale people out.

I, for one, am very comfortable in my white skin. Spending time out of your day to bake has never made sense to me. For whatever reason, it reminds me of people trying to be what they aren't. Kinda like chicks getting implants. Biggest turnoff ever! The flattest set of real boobs on a girl is far better than the most perfect "looking" set of fake boobs on a girl. That might be another good poll question.

I was down there for a week and did just fine...and I'm pretty pasty.

That's pretty brave Itheus...especially with the surface area you had to be worried about.
