One of the last interviews I did before I got canned was with a Missouri DOT official who said taxing based on miles driven per year is something nearly every state in the union will be at the very least looking at within 10 to 20 years...so, take that for what its worth.
Frankly, I think it's a little dumb, but I can certainly understand public officials willingness to give it a shot. Though, why not just increase the gas tax? Seems to be a bit simpler solution to the same problem to me.

I can see both sides of this.
One reason for it is the development of electric vehicles. People who drive electric cars will still be using the roads but they won't be paying the gas tax.
A reason against it (IMO) is it puts the government that much closer to our personal lives. I really don't want the government telling me where I can and cannot drive to. That will lead to more government involvement in our lives.

I really don't see this one going through. I think MoHawk had the better idea of raising gas taxes if needed. Hopefully neither of these will be done, although I did read the Iowa gas tax is going up something like 7 cents per gallon.

Another idea is to increase property tax rates in states where you pay tax on your car each year, like Missouri. If the move towards taxed per mile is a move to get out in front of the move to electric or cars not dependent on gasoline, I really can't argue with it.
I think its a progressive tax, though it will definitely weigh more on those of us in the rural areas rather than the urban centers due to the abundance of public transportation in the major metro areas.
If I lived in Chicago/NY/SF anywhere with a viable subway system, I'd sell my car in a heartbeat and not think twice about it.

Even in the huge metropolis of Des Moines people use van pooling or the bus. I am one of the van poolers. I don't think the mileage tax would work because people would be able to get around it.

Very true, escecially if you work at a larger company in Des Moines.
