If you haven't seen it, it is a (sort of) documentary by Bill Maher where he goes around and asks different religious folks tough questions on how/why they believe what they do. Very entertaining, somewhat informative, and a bit controversial. It's sure to piss people off... so naturally, I liked it. Maher asks a lot of the same questions I've wanted to ask. Also, some of the best stuff is in the 'deleted scenes'. Not sure why he took out some of the those from the main film. Good stuff! I think I now need to rent "Jesus Camp" for a more horrific spin on the topic.

I saw this last night actually. I thought it was great.
I enjoyed watching some of the people he was interviewing stumble around with their answers. It's pretty amazing how mad some people can get when you question their religion. He wasn't even doing it in a disrespectful way. He was asking legitmate, intelligent questions.
Great documentary though. Highly recommended.

Many people became very annoyed even though Maher was very professional. He also came at people with facts to back up his questions and well.... you know how people hate facts getting in the way of their beliefs.

While I'm sure I'd thoroughly enjoy Maher's annihilation of the superstitious, I'm wary of the logical leap he makes from "many people believe crazy shit" = "there is no God."
There may or may not be a God, i.e. a subjective component to the universe. The fucked-up belief systems of human beings are irrelevant to the equation.

Maher never says "there is no God".
He merely asks questions and backs things up with facts. You know where he stands, but he is pretty respectful.

He states that he "doesn't know" and that nobody does. He only argues that the religions of today are bad for the world. It's pretty much almost exactly how I feel about it. I don't think that there is no god, period. I don't know if there is one or not. I am fairly certain that there is no "Christian" or "Muslim" god though. I just don't believe that if there was some sort of all powerful being out there, that he/she/it would be so petty as to require everyone to worship him (without providing some sort of proof of his existence) and then punish the non-believers by burning them for an eternity. That's just ridiculous. If that is true, then god is an angry, petty, jealous, insecure dick-wipe.

On his show he has taken agnostics to task from time to time. Personally, I believe that agnosticism is the only honest opinion. You can't "know" one way or the other. I'll rent this for sure.

I'm in as well. I've seen it at the Redbox next door, but I had priorities on other movies. This one just moved up a few slots.

I think there are just as many atheist morons/assholes as religious ones. I can't stand Maher but I might check this out.

Simply a great movie. It asks tough questions and really exposes the hypocrisy of the people that make up religion.

I'd say that this fits right in: hnwasteland.proboards47.com/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&thread=2230You always hear about how you should respect others' "faith." Really? Why? I don't need to respect the absurd, be it 72 virgins for murdering innocents or trying to force 9 year olds to bear incest-induced progeny. Here's the bottom line: If there is a God, he, via evolution, endowed you with a brain capable of reason and rational thought. Fucking use it or risk offending the creator of such.
