They've been setting up speed traps on 235 to catch all the visitors to the boys state tourney. Welcome to Des Moines.......have a $100 ticket on us........come back soon now.

Saw a speed trap on I-80 in the Newton area today. Some mouthbreathing county mounty was on the Highway 14 bridge aiming a hand-held radar gun at drivers and his buds were picking up poor slobs down the road.
Consider yourself warned.

guys, are pulling over cars going less then 10mph over? I don't really know what their threshhold is. I would imagine it probably depends how busy they are.

In my experience in The DM, it's pretty rare to be pulled over on the interstate/freeway for 10 over, unless you're inept at disguising your intoxication. On the side streets, though, especially in Windsor Heights, they will nail you for 5-10 over. I'd advise driving the speed limit through St. Patrick's day.

Interesting topic. I have driven the I-80 (Iowa City to Quad Cities) and then I-88 east across Illinois back and forth probably 10 times each year for the past 15 years and never, ever saw any cops.
I did that trip just 2 weeks ago and saw 1 speed-trap on I-80 and 3 on I-88 during just my one-way trip. I suspect revenues at the Policy Dept are down like everywhere else so they are looking for a way to put some cash in their accounts.
Geez....will it never stop?

Seth-1, cops-0 However, some cops have evolved in intelligence and either flash (quickly turn on and off) Ka band (which I can still beat) or they'll flash laser, which takes a deft brake foot to avoid a ticket. Cops-1, Seth-0 Let's just say, I've made it to IC in under 3 hours before....on I-88.

I've seen many a speed trap on I-88 on my IC to Chicago trips. Luckily I've never been nabbed.

I suppose I should get my registration updated tomorrow to avoid another $90 fee. Anyone know if the polk count treasurer is open on Saturday mornings?

It's obviously past Saturday but the answer is no, they aren't. My wife says you can do it online though.

I am going to hit it hard downtown tomorrow, and I have made the concious decision to leave my car at home in Ankeny, so I don't make any "not so smart" decisions.
