That's what Skadden Arps is offering right now, take a year off and get 1/3 of your normal pay and come back in a year and everything will be fine. www.nytimes.com/2009/04/13/nyregion/13bigcity.html?_r=1&emI wouldn't take it because I would expect them to not take me back in a year. If they are that slow, they will start firing people and what better group to start with than the lazy people who took a year off?

Heck yeah I would...as long as I have the fact that they'll take me back in a year, then no question about it.

Seriously, you couldn't live on 80k a year? People live on way less a year than that.

This is me not commenting on this thread because of how ridiculously flawed the thinking is behind it.
Not to be a dick, but I SERIOUSLY hope you're kidding autolykos because many on here would kill to make 80 G's a year, or to just have a job. So, if you're just kidding around, my apologies, but if you are serious...
Get your head out of your ass.

I do call it a living, and I'm a pretty happy person. I have a beautiful wife, a great network of friends, and am employeed at one of the only corporations turning profit right now. So go fuck your holier than thou ass.

I don't know. Do you watch American Idol, the Amazing Race and/or Survivor? Do consider the Olive Garden or Red Lobster to be fine dining? Have you ever said the words "Where's my bailout?" (without joking)?

I think it's pretty obvious that Chuck doesn't make anywhere close to $80K because if he did he would realize that a person could live very comfortably off that for a year especially in Iowa.

I'd take the money and get the retention in a written contract. Hello, mountains.
And maybe work part time at Starbucks or some such shit just for the mindless hell of it, and the free coffee.

I've actually thought of that two, maybe getting a part timer at a golf course... or Starbucks. (hey, free coffee )

I retire in a year and a half. One of the ideas being kicked around is work as a starter at the golf course (or cleaning the golf carts - don't care). any free golf gained is a bonus and at this point i need the stress free job.

Just make sure CEO Dodd or CEO Fwank or Timmy G or CEObama doesn't have an interest in the lawyering industry. I hear they're pretty tough on previously written contracts. Why wait to head to the mountains? I couldn't live anywhere else. P.S. The Java Hut is now hiring. All you need is a little pachouli and a total disregard for self-cleanliness and you're in.

Yeah, they'll give you the retention in a written contract alright. Then, the day you come back you'll go meet the Bobs in HR and turn in your badge and clean out your office. Employment at will bitches. Oh but I'm sure Skadden would just say to ol' T-hawk, "Oh man, oh man, we really like you and you are on the fast track to partner so we'll definitely take you back after you've been frying brain cells in Amsterdam for a year. You are so special." Get real, that $80k is a fucking severance deal where the firm is telling you to take a fucking hike but they don't want the stigma of firing people. There's probably a waiver of claims clause in that contract and you probably wouldn't even be able to apply for unemployment.

I'm just a sorry prole with a big mouth, but $80k and a year to find a new job? Make sure to buy my a violin so I can play a pretty ballad for you. WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO WHERE A MAN GETS LAID OFF AND RECEIVES $80K??? (all hypotheticals, of course) And so I will hear the retort of your mortgages, car payments, etc needing paid in a year. Well, if you haven't found a job in year, sorry...your expectations are too high. And if the job you did find won't pay your bills...well gues what...you're in the same category of the people you deplore. You aren't financally prepared. Cheers. No one follows the killa'.

I know, $80k is freaking nothing. The UAW guys got $140k when they got laid off in the past few years. The fact is the idiot leftist featured in that NYT article is too dumb to realize that the Skadden "Banking Practice Group" is NEVER going to return to its glory days and she is being terminated and is wasting all of her money.

Those fuckers would owe me a lot of money if they rescinded. Bankruptcy might get them off the hook, but nothing else would. In any event, a company making that kind of offer is sending a signal that it might be a good time for everyone to be on the lookout for a new job.

You overestimate your market power to dictate the terms and conditions of the contract.

You overestimate your market power to dictate the terms and conditions of the contract. If they wouldn't give me an ironclad contract then I wouldn't take the deal. I'd never work for those fuckers anyway so the point is moot.
