Is it neccessary? Am I cold hearted? I don't have a kid, work in a huge corporate cubicle cessapool, and find myself irrated when some gal I don't know very well brings her kid in, and I'm supposed to oogle over it like it's the cutest thing I've ever seen. Like I said, I don't have a kid yet, so I'm sure there is a huge sense of pride to show it off...but do you really need to bring it in to work to thousands of strangers that are trying to get work done? Thoughts? It really sucks if they start to cry.

I'm with you and I am a parent. I don't get why people want to bring their kids in to the work place. I understand if they are in town and need to pick something up on a day off but bringing them in to show off is wrong. Then again I'm also not a female....

I feel the same way, I also have no children and god willing won't for a great long while, if ever. I also feel the same way towards brides. Nobody gives a shit. Why do you think you are so special because you are getting married or have a kid. Your not special at all. The fact that you are getting married or do have a kid actually in my mind makes you less special, because "everybody" gets married and has kids.

Holy shit, does this subject hit home.
EVERYwhere I have worked (and it's been a lot of places, if you've been keeping score at home) has had these women who insist on bringing their little kids in. This includes a few bosses I have had.
WTF? It's bad enough to make adults spend 8 hours a day in these places. Bringing in your kids should qualify as child abuse. The kid doesn't want to be there, the adults don't want them there.
Even worse is a former employer of mine who had a "Bring Your Kid to Work Day". The kids had to be a certain age though... that is, old enough to WORK! I shit you not, this crap factory put the kids to work making marketing binders and brochures. All at the great pay of NOTHING. At least the kids DO get the gift in knowing to avoid that shithole company when they get to the point of seeking a real job.

My co-workers ask me to bring my kid in. No lie. I'm not trying to be egotistical or anything, but they always want to know when he'll be in. We have a smaller office, so I'd assume that sort of environment is ok.

Do you paper shufflers have lactation rooms at your companies? For the gal on the go.

I've taken my 10 month old daughter to both my wife's and my place of work. But I only take her to see people who want to see her. There's nothing more annoying than some fucking coworker's bored kid walking around the office bugging people.
Gumby...that bring your kid TO work day shit was illegal as hell.

Gumby...that bring your kid TO work day shit was illegal as hell. Sure was. Just one of many things about that place that royally sucked ass. The only reason I haven't turned them in for shit like that is that one of my friends still works there (how, I have no idea). The place is almost just like Initech in the movie 'Office Space', only worse because there are many more douchebags in management.

I would also throw out there that the size of company would be very relevant. I work for a large corporation....and if I worked for a place of about 10-20 people, I would be more inclined to bring a kid in.

Thankfully this is not something I normally have to live with. You would be amazed at the lengths single parents go to to take care of their kids and still serve there country.
