Stupid. If they could just find a way to kick the 5-6 million illegals out of their state, they might solve a lot of their problems. Then again, probably not. Californians as a whole are pretty dim. They'd find a way to fuck it all up regardless.

I think the founding fathers would be all for it. They all agreed there should be a minuscule federal gov., a strong state government, and a fairly standard local gov.
Size and diversity (both geographic and social) would warrant such a reformation.
BUT, how would you split up the debt, and any sparsely populated areas with a wealth of natural resources would be a hot bed.
I don't think this is something the fed should try to prevent, but because (as a federalist) I believe this is something that has to be worked within the state, and only through popular vote. (weighted by geographic location)
Once border location is figured out, and economic vote would have to occur, with majority approval in each of the four new states before any changes could happen...
basically, I don't think there is any way hell this could possibly happen without federally forced tyranny. And it is certainly wrong for any of us, in any other state, to have any say in the matter.

They argued that proposition relentlessly. Here's CA's problem: Fucking ballot initiatives. These ballot initiatives allow the rubes to vote all kinds of spending without paying for it. The CA constitution has been amended 500 times. That is obscene. CA will never dig out of this hole until they get rid of the ballot initiatives.

Thunder is correct, we had 6 ballot initiatives on the last election. Well, at least they did, I am a Florida resident. Only one passed was the one where they don't increase the salary of the elected reps unless the state is out of debt.
I like the idea, but getting enough people to agree to do it would be very difficult.

not fair, as military personnel, I was allowed to choose my state while enlisted. Because the fed was stealing from me, from a legal standpoint anyway... I chose Fl (no state taxes) as my residence... That looks awfull I know, but legally the only reason my fed should be taxing me is for interstate commerce and foreign policy... the moment they overstep that, we taxpayers become criminals for funding illegal operations. Because the fed tyranny wil not allow me to pay federal taxes without breaking the law, minimizing my taxes is patriotic. I know that is a stretch, but when our fed is based on thievery what can our country be based on... thievery... trust me guys, this is not the US of America, if it was the majority of our politicians would kill themselves to save face. The fact that they don't merely shows that we our funding an unconstitutional beast.
