www.cbs8.com/Global/story.asp?S=10431451Been lively around here to say the least, but i get another day with the family. Awesome! This is the first time in my 21 years that I have seen or heard of an aircraft carrier being delayed on deployment date.

Aren't you a machinist/mechanic?
So shouldn't you be busy fixing something? (or at least ordering somebody to fix something?)

Yes I am a Machinist Mate. Yes, it was my gear broken. I can't say what of course. No I am not a sabotuer. Way to scared of the consequences of that one. This wasn't anybodies fault but the maintenance coordinator that kept kicking the repair down the road until it finally just broke to the point it had to be fixed before we left. One of those things that required a tech assist. If there was an ass reaming I wasn't involved. Certainly not the ships fault.
you out yet Seth? Thought you retired in December or thereabouts.

Terminal leave starts on 10/15.....retirement date is 12/1/09. Four solid career offers on the table with two more coming in. Exciting times for sure.

Good to here. Got to get to TAP class when I get back. Went to the MOAA seminar not to long ago with the wife. That scared the hell out of me until he started talking about nukes being an exception. Not so worried about it now. Big debate now is whether to use the post 9/11 GI bill and finish my degree, or go with the current work experience, job titles and find a job in my field. Pass the benefits on to my sons. That cuts the retirement requirements back quite a bit. I tried telling the wife the plan was to send the boys into the Navy for 3 years to earn their own college tuition. That didn't go over very well.

FWIW... some thoughts. - I'm taking the continuing education route. - When your sons are old enough, neither you or your wife will have much final say in their direction. - You should modify your sig to read: President of the USS Ronald Reagan Iowa Hawkeye Fan Club for Adrift Iowans.

I have my pharmacy degree, MBA and a clinical residency and have no plans for yet another piece of paper. So for me, it's a no-brainer to pass the GI-edu bennies to my two kids. It's like winning a $96K lottery I tell ya!

You are set Seth, good to here. I have about 140 general credits, no distinct major and they are all lower level, work based type stuff with the exception of about 75 credits from ISU. I am thinking that I can get a job without getting a degree, have the wife work and collect the retirement from the Navy. Should be comfortable for the rest of my life. Won't be rich, but won't starve either. I personally would stay in the navy another 3 years and then retire from shore duty, finish my degree and move on, but the wife is done with the navy. Hard to bitch about what I want when she has followed me around and not really gotten into her career the last 15 years.

I chose to come back to Great Lakes after Guam, and despite being counseled it would kill my chances for wearing the next collar device, I did it anyway. I wanted my kids to be able to go through one school system for JR highschool and highschool. So I made the sacrifice. While it did inhibit me from making 0-5, I have ZERO regrets about choosing the kids as my #1 priority. It was the right thing to do. (Plus I've been able to see a boat-load (pun intended) of Iowa games.....no sacrifice there!

You and I are thinking along the same lines. 2 years left and I am done. They will be 10 and 12 when we move for hopefully the very last time. Should be able to settle in and get comfortable. I may not see a boat load of Iowa games, but living in west central Florida will mean that I get to golf and fish year round. Going to enjoy getting paid to wake up.
