I was reading the local paper here in beautiful Marshalltown last night. Said that the percentage of students in the district getting reduced or free lunches is 60.9%.
Not a typo. 60.9 fucking percent!!
Holy Jeebus. I knew Mtown was full of proles (hell, I AM one), but I never believed that my Mtown was more than 50% proles! Last year, the number was 56%!
So this tells me that something has to be wrong with the system. School lunches cost like $1.60 per kid. Who the f**k can't afford that??
And then to top it off, the district will give all of the teachers raises of 3.3%. Not bad for a district that considers a "school year" to be about 7.5 months what with all of the in-service days, spring breaks, winter breaks, snow days, etc.
To top it off even more, the district agreed earlier this year to allow US Cellular to install an antenna on the football field to improve cell reception in town. The district gets like $2,000 a month. No real consensus on where this dough will be going, but you can bet your ass that it won't be going to the "free lunch" program or anything else to eleviate the burden of taxpayers.
I won't even go into the fact that Mtown is STILL on the "district in need of assistance" list in reference to the No Child Left Behind Act, because frankly... I think the whole "act" is a sham and complete bullshit.
But, I am NEVER ever fucking voting for any goddamned bonding shit for the school EVER again. f**k 'em. If they want something, cut the fat and stop raping the taxpayers.
And start making the "free lunch program" a bit harder to abuse.
