over the past two weeks. My job sucks ass. Oh well, hopefully it won't be so busy after the first of the year.
Any of you dudes get nutpunched at the end of the year?
Gumby - do you have a big push to pay out the proles before the end of the year to clean up your books or do you just roll with the punches?

This week was pretty slow for us.
Last week we had a gal quit, and we were already working with meager skeleton crew. I was ass slammed on Christmas Eve (as you can read my bitching in another thread).

Sorry man. I worked about 15 hours this week, and showed up for a few hours more for a spectacularly elitist firm luncheon.

Not really a case of cleaning up our books because a lot of shit that I have still sitting around is merely sitting there waiting for Powers of Attorney forms and other stuff that the proles need to send back to me. I can't do anything until I get those documents on some of my claims. That being said, there ARE a tremendous amount of fuckwads that picked this afternoon to call in a bitch about their settlement amount, needing their rental car extended, etc, etc. People are really fucking stupid. My shit-hole job just makes me realize that more with each day.

There hasn't really been a search. I've been back in school since June.
The good thing is that I'm at a perfect 4.0 for the first time in my life. The bad thing is that I still don't know wtf I want to --- or have the time & money to study for.

The bad thing is that I still don't know wtf I want to --- or have the time & money to study for. Amazing how studying on your own money and when you have a family motivates you, isn't it? In terms of what to study, that's a helluva pickle. Back when I was deciding what to do after undergrad, I could see the writing on the wall with respect to the hollowing out of the US economy, there are so many people chasing so few jobs and there are so many jobs getting moved offshore. I thought about going into accounting or computers, but I heard multiple stories about the CPA jobs going to the Phillipines and India and all kinds of computer shit getting sent to India (and this was back in the late 90's, it has gotten worse today), so I picked law thinking those jobs would never get offshored, then sure as shit, the ABA decided that even legal work can get offshored to India. Other than government work, construction, healthcare and certain often low paying service jobs (hair stylist, restaurant, fluffer, etc.) the future of our economy without some bubble to fuel job growth is scary. The un/under-employment rate amongst new grads is probably near 25%, and then you have to try to find something that you think might want to do when you grow up - it ain't pretty. What kinds of things are you thinking about? Do you have any ideas in mind?

What kinds of things are you thinking about? Do you have any ideas in mind? What's weird about it - is that the first time I went to school, I was blowing my own money. This time, it's a federal grant. Right now it would be easier to segue into computer engineering with my background, but I'd like to to something chemistry or pharmacy related. The problem with that is the extra schooling required. The wife graduates in May, and she will easily find a job to get at least some income - but that may require a move back to Iowa or Minnesota. Unfortunately, a move would cause out of state tuition & immediately cancel my remaining unemployment benefits. ---This would almost require me to get a job in the interim before I was able to go to school there & graduate. At this point I'm at a bit of a crossroads on what to do. This whole situation has been quite humbling, but I'm really amazed at how well things have been going. I was talking to the wife New Year's Eve and said - "One year ago I was gainfully employed in a very shitty job, you were in school and things were OK. If you'd have told me that next Jan 1, I'd be unemployed for 9 months, and be 22 straight A hours towards a degree... and we aren't living out of a car or borrowed one dime--- I'd have called you crazy." All I need now is a decent sized tax return to tide us over to that date in May.

Socal,
When you went back to school did you get a clean slate with your GPA? I've really considered going back to school but my GPA was a crappy 2.25 when I graduated due to laziness and going through the motions. Now that I'm older I would kind of like to go back convinced I would actually take it as seriously as I should have the first time.
Reading this quote: "One year ago I was gainfully employed in a very shitty job, you were in school and things were OK. If you'd have told me that next Jan 1, I'd be unemployed for 9 months, and be 22 straight A hours towards a degree... and we aren't living out of a car or borrowed one dime--- I'd have called you crazy." makes me want to go back to school as things have become pretty mundane around here and I'm not really satisfied with my job and feeling like a number is starting to get pretty old.

I myself am considering a career change in 2010. My wife wants to live in Iowa City so I'm looking to get back to the IC. Changing things up helps keep life interesting.

Yep, a clean slate. Their minimum was a 'C' to transfer. All sciences (bio/chem) are required to be retaken after 5 years due to advances. I could have argued to carry some over, but I consider that a past life. What I find interesting is that it is fun and easy now. Having a job teaches you about deadlines and requirements. Those are two things I didn't acknowledge 20 years ago. So just enroll for 1 class at minimum. Perhaps that class will become the proverbial "light at the end of the tunnel" from your daily routine. Watch this video. If you can see any of the lyrics applying, do something. www.lyricsondemand.com/n/nineinchnailslyrics/everydayisexactlythesamelyrics.html

Socal, When you went back to school did you get a clean slate with your GPA? I wouldn't take Socal's answer 100% to heart. I am going back to school starting Jan. 11. My undergrad GPA was mid 2.9x, due to the same reasons you listed. My plan is to get into a Physical Therapy Doctorate (hopefully at Iowa). You need probably at least a 3.50 to get in as they only take about 32 of 250+ applicants/year. I need to take all of the science (bio/chem/physiology/math) prereqs. that didn't need to take to earn my undergrad BA in Management. I have 4 or 5 semesters to turn that 2.9x into a high 3.xx. I need to do this while working around 30 hrs/week parttime too. Life is probably going to be hell for the next 4 or 5 years, but it should be worth it especially having a good paying job vs. working bullshit part time jobs like or selling insurance like I have been doing for the last couple of years.
