I figured there's no better place to solicit advice on how to best handle a speeding ticket than the Wasteland, right? I got a ticket for 36 in a 25 here in Iowa City. Do I show up in court later this month and fight it, or just pay the $103 fine and get it over with. (Yes, I was speeding, just for the record) Opinions and commentary are welcome. BTR....since you don't have a car, and probably not even a driver's license, I'll have to discount your opinions by at least 50%.

Fuck you pal, why don't you just follow the god damn law next time, hippie? I have received ZERO speeding tickets because I follow the law and in the rare instances where I have been pulled over for allegedly speeding, I have a helluva line about getting new tires that are mis-sized causing my speedometer to be incorrect - when the fuzz check my record and see it is as clean as a whistle, I am released with a mere warning. Pay your fucking ticket, an hour of your time that you could be at home watching Oprah or pr0n is worth much more than the $103.

How do you fight it when you admittedly broke the law? You aren't a prole, pay it. Isn't your time worth more than the $103.

Just accept you fucked up and pay the piper. You wanna fucking talk morals, pal? How does the god damn state justify charging a guy 103 fucking dollars for driving a few mph over the speed limit? He ain't hurting anyone and people like Ron who drive 11 mph above the posted speed limit ain't causing a slew of traffic accidents. Now he's gonna get effed in the A and have to shell out the equivalent of 5 cases of Coors to the man AND he's gonna get effed in the A again when his insurance premiums go up. I've seen Ron pull out of the tailgating lot with a .26 BAC and even in that state, he is a safer driver than half the idiots on the road, yet he's the one getting effed. Totally not moral.

It's $103 bucks. Personally, I'd probably just pay it, but I'd be fucking pissed that the cop didn't drop it to ten over, so I might show up out of spite.

I realize the speeding in a lower zone such as a 25mph zone as compared to a 55 is more, but 11mph over and it is a $103? God damn that is steep. I got a 65 in a 55 and it was $84 or something like that last summer.
Hell I would go and plead not guilty and then when you back again if the cop does show just tell the judge you decided to plead guilty and then you made that fucker go to court for nothing and that would probably piss him off and if he doesn't show you are off the hook.

There are a few considerations you should look at: 1) Is this your first tix in some time now-in other words how many moving violations do you have in the recent past (usu consider the past yr.) 2) In IL you can get ct. supervision which means it won't go down as a conviction-I don't know if IA has the equivalent of that or not, but you should check that out. 3) Unless you have set it for a trial-whether the cop is there or not on date 1 is irrelevant b/c that is prolly just a pre-trial (i.e. a date to tell the persecutor if'n you gonna fight this tix or not). If you set for trial and cop is a no show great-probably dismissed. If cop shows maybe you could get your money's worth and argue that you were speeding but not that high-i.e. get it below 10 over and the judge may go along w. it. 4) Just negotiate w/ the prosecutor (over phone if they will) to reduce it to under 10 or best case to a non-mover.
Note: Usually the least expensive option is to just pay it (the fine) and any court appearance will add "court costs" but you should speak with the Clerk's office to determine what your monetary outlay could be if ct appearance ocurrs.
Good luck.

As discussed over breakfast on Saturday, I'll let you know how my court appearance goes on 2/22....I was pulled over for "failure to move over to left lane" on the intersate when two cops had a guy pulled over. I did slow down but passed them in the right lane.
Crap ticket, but alas, I have to attend court. Hope the cop doesn't show.
Nothing like driving on a ticket for 2+ weeks.
