Recent events have compelled me to conclude that I need to own a handgun. I'm not happy about it.
Any suggestions on models? Any of you own one?
EDIT: I'm not talking about paranoid teabagging/Glenn Beck bullshit. I'm talking about actual personal threats.

I believe the nature of the threats will determine the type of gat you should buy. Please elaborate. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, you are a badass extraordinaire who could kick anyone's ass. If the psychopath is like the other random ex-husband nuts who kill their wife's lawyer, you'll be dead before you have time to draw - if you're doing family law, just get into a new line of work. That shit's more dangerous than being a cop, prosecutor or judge.

Perhaps I should enter a new field. I don't do family law anymore for the reasons you stated. In any event...Sig or Glock?

How many bong hits for Jesus did you take before that pic was taken? Jesus was not present. It's a fun game you should play called "Liquor and Knives".

Get a Desert Eagle.
Hey Itheus, is that the game where you defend yourself from the wife while she tries to stab you?

It's not domestic violence, it's domestic entertainment.

Thunder-
To answer your question... how many shots do you think you'll need to take? How is your aim? Just some things to ponder.
The more power, the lesser the accuracy (generally).
Unless of course, you are talking about a sniper rifle. That would be a perfect way to take a douchebag out!!

Yeah, see, that crazy cocksucker is exactly what I'm not. I just need some mobile personal protection. I wouldn't even keep it loaded at home, or keep it at home at all because I've got a kid and because if someone tried to break into my house I'd know it and I wouldn't need a gun to take care of that shit. I'm talking about on the job safety here as well as mountain wilderness shit (saw a mountain lion a couple of years back...was feeling negligent only sporting a buck knife.) Kind of a don't bring a knife to a gunfight deal. I DO NOT plan on ever discharging it. I just want the option should the need arise. Nice fucking society we live in.

It's not domestic violence, it's domestic entertainment. Especially when it's caught on video. Like on COPS or Maury or some such shit.

If you want a serious discussion about weapons, let me know. I like my weapons. What are your needs, really? Home defense, concealed carry, etc. Different weapons for different applications.
Personally, I have a permit and carry a Glock 27 - .40 in a subcompact frame (8 in the mag, one in the pipe). It is very concealable and packs a big punch with hollow points. For home defense, I have a twelve-gauge Mossberg Persuader loaded with "00" buckshot. I do not have to worry about shooting through walls because the only other person in the house is my wife and she will always be behind me. Stay away from small caliber stuff. You need to be able to put the bad guy down with a couple of shots for your protection, both physically and legally.

The 27 looks like something I might be interested in.

Check out the Kimber, a very nice 1911 model pistol with plenty of stopping power. Glock also makes a compact .45 that is a fine weapon.

It would be one of those things that would be sweet to have but defnately not something that would be needed and I'd probably just end up shooting things that don't need to be shot at. How much do these babies run anyway? I'd imagine they are not cheap. www.kimberamerica.com/

Depending on the model, you can get a nice Kimber on Gunbroker.com for $500-$600, give or take. The Glocks are in the same ballpark. Now, you can get custom stuff and match pistols that will go in excess of a grand, but they are not really necessary for personal defense. Most handgun incidents occur within ten feet.

G-G-G-Guns are bad ........ m'kay No, people are bad......,m'kay? Yeah I know the whole guns aren’t bad, people are, argument. I just respectfully disagree. Guns are designed to kill people (well, for the most part anyway). Killing people is bad. Therefore, in my opinion, guns are bad too. The sooner we get rid of guns, (ALL GUNS) the sooner our world will change for the better. Home defense can be accomplished with non lethal weaponry, in the event it is ever necessary. If you feel compelled to hunt, use a bow and arrow or chase after the fucker and beat it to death. But, ideally, I’d like to see our planet evolve to a point where killing, in any form, is behind us. This is probably going to take a long time. At least a few months.
