I assume you are the same Travis from the other board. You went to Russel? What year did you graduate?

You are a year older than me then. My senior year (00) we played you guys in football. You I think Russel was the worst HS football team ever that year. Somethings I remember about that game:
1) They are a member of the Blue Grass Conference.
2) Does the school have a Rodeo team? I swore that I saw a rodeo arena on school grounds.
3) I had to block this one big tall guy. He smelled REALLY bad. So bad I held my breath while blocking him. Sometimes I just hit him and released him because it was that bad. It didn't matter because the entire team was so bad that I think any 8-man team could have beat them 8-on-11.
4) I remember our running backs being confused by how bad their defense was. They never had to cut back, just run a straight line to the end zone. This was further en-grained in me during the Monday film review after the game when I watched a safety begin to backpedal at the snap and back pedal all the way to the endzone, untouched, on a long run for a TD. They were running away from our ball carriers.
5) Their best player was an Offensive Guard who was female.

Speaking of Russell, Iowa I used to do a lot of hunting on Rathbun and Browns Slough, we had a lease where we stayed on the weekends just about 2 miles south of town. During Hawkeye gamedays we would quit hunting early and head to the bar in Russell to watch a little football. Every time we went there there was this big, tall SOB named Drew ( who was always wasted ), he would start shit with us because we were Hawkeye fans and too loud..... This guy had to have been 6'5"+ and not fat, just a big dude. Does that guy sound familiar Travis? This was back in the 96-98 timeframe.

Yeah, that all sounds about right. It's hard to compete at any level when your football team only has 18 players. We couldn't even scrimmage. My senior year in football was the last year they played 11 man. We ended up being re-aligned conference wise. My senior year, Class A, we played Green Mt Garwin, HLV Victor, Van fucking Meter, Lynnville Sully, and there was 1 other team we played that year that ended up being rated at one time or another in the top 10. We had 20 kids on our sideline, they had 50 or more sometimes. We had no business playing those schools. And it only got worse after I left.
As for Drew, I can't remember anyone with that name being that big. Was the name of the bar the "Southside"?
Edit: North Mahaska was the other school I believe that year. Or Tri County Thornburg. It was one of those two.

Maybe we played you in 99 if that is the last year they played 11 man. I don't know if we were ever rated that year or not but we had to have been close. All 4 years that I played we were one of the last couple of schools out of the playoffs of the 16 teams that get in. We played in the conference with Lynnville, HLV, Waco, Tri-County, etc. Tri-County was definitely one of the ranked teams. Lynnville was for sure as they were the only team that we never had a chance against. I think 99 was the year that we went to 4 OT with WACO.

We didn't frequent much of anything in Russell besides this particular bar for football games, we would eat/drink in Chariton or Albia ( Bogie's Steakhouse rocks ) quite often.

Oddly enough, for a town of 500, yes. There are 2 bars in Russell.
