This issue really, really pisses me off. I've grown to like Des Moines while living here because there seems to be an effort to make it cooler and more appealing to the younger crowd. I think the Val Air Ballroom is a great venue and something that can be pointed at as a highlight for someone considering moving to the area. They have quite a few rock concerts which are naturally loud. Now, some cunt from West Des Moines is pushing to get the city council to make the place be quiet and complaining about the noise. There are a few other old hags in the area that is helping her push the cause. The thing I do not understand is how easily it is for old fucks that are against anything cool to get a ton of support and attention. There are about eight people who have written letters to the city council complaining and it appears the place is under threat of being shut down. Why isn't it apparent that the thousands of people who attend shows at this venue every year would like to tell those people to fuck off and if it bothers them so much move or sleep with ear plugs in. Fucking asshole fun haters. www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20100527/NEWS03/5270344/Hansen-Death-knell-sounds-louder-for-Val-Air-Ballroom&theme=HANSEN

If the Val Air was loud when they moved in they're fucked, but if it just suddenly got loud, there is a good argument the place is a nuisance and those people should either get the nuisance stopped or be compensated for loss of the quiet enjoyment of their property. I'm telling ya, when that fucking Techno party was going on right outside my window and I had to hear fucking techno music for 8 hours on my day off, I was fucking pissed off because my neighborhood ain't the kind of place where you throw fucking techno parties outside. These people could have a pretty legitimate beef and the Val Air has no right to just suddenly change the nature of the neighborhood and create a nuisance for its neighbors.
If I were on the City Council, I'd offer up a settlement agreement where the Val Air and/or city gave these people to waive claims related to the noise and move on with it.

Twine I'm sure you're familiar with battle I've had with Dahl's. Now they are renigging their initial plan and are wanting to put the gas station, car wash (which wasn't even in the original plans), and convenience store on our street instead of 35th. Dahl's is esentially holding the Ingersoll business owners hostage. Dahl's says it 34th or nothin' at all. Well of course they want a fucking gas station for more drive by business. All of the neighborhood organizations want it too, because again Dahl's said they WOULD NOT put it on 35th (although won't give a reason why). So, Dahl's has made the handful of its residential neighbors have to fight against this as the proposed changes will make my neighborhood a fucking nightmare. I can barely turn on to Ingersoll the way it is...but I DIGRESS. The reason I post this is because the handful of residents look like the bad guys in this scenario - because we just don't support the amount of traffic this would bring. However, EVERYONE else wants it. No one pays attention to the fact that it's DAHLS that changed their mind to move everything, and it's DAHLS that refuses to build on 35th. Sometimes there's more than meets the eye in these disputes. Are the neighbors of Val-Air being crusty old fuckers that hate everything? Very likely...but just showing the other side on some of these disputes. I've taken time off work just to go to these boring ass city council meetings, written speeches, e-mails to the mayor...and we're going to lose anyway. The rich dicks south of Grand, in Waterbury, and Ingersoll business owners will get their ways. City council doesn't give a fuck, though we do have mayor Cownie supposedly on our side (which is weird since he owns a business on Ingersoll). But I refuse to go down w/o a fight. I let Dahl's walk over me last time - so just so I have a good conscience I'm doing everything I can. I reciprocate your

I guess that would piss me off too if I were you since 35th Street is in the same parking lot and there is absolutely nothing else there. I don't see why it would make much of a differece to put it on 35th rather than 34th when there are buisnesses on every corner of that intersection and a stoplight already there. Who knows, maybe they will teardown the old shithole I used to live in and put something there in its place.
I'm kind of suprised you would side with the people bitching about the music form Val Air though, being a big music fan and all.
Oh, and Itheus, I'm sure you'll get a kick out of this. I scored backstage passes to 311 and I don't even really like them all that much.

I'm not really standing up for them - like I said, you're probably right about them - but after this Dahl's experience, having to raise hell and feel like the 'squeaking wheel', I just am a bit standoffish about putting all the blame on the neighbors. Trust me, I definitely don't want Val-Air to close their doors. Ya dude, 311 sucks. That's kind of funny. You should go back stage and piss on them. My boss is from Omaha, has many musician friends, and says 311 is not liked at all by any of them, especially anyone that's played a show with them. I've heard they are dicks. And their music sucks.
