My brother got married tonight in IC/Coralville. Reception was at Coralville Holiday Inn. For the last hour of the reception I talked to the officer that was assigned to work the reception. He was a super cool guy. I asked him point blank, "do IC cops look for athletes?" he said some guys will, but he doesn't, as he is a fan, said he pulled over shonn greene once, smelled booze on him tail light out etc. Said he asked him if he was an athlete and Greene game him his ID and the guy let him go. The guy was super cool I just shot the shit with him. I asked him if he was more likely to pull me over as a drunk white guy, or my girlfriend (a mostly sober asian chick). You can only guess what he said. I also asked him about DWB tickets (driving while black). He basically just asked me who I would most likely pull over. He said he mostly works section 8 areas, and he has only done a handful of speeding tickets in the last year. This particular cop was 24 years old, but he did say that there are some guys on the force that are bigger dicks. The told me once the reception ended at 12 he was going to head over to the attached bar until about 2, then pick his buddies up from the ped mall and give them a ride home.
Overall it was a pretty fun experience. Mostly because I pretty much agreed with the guy that if you are breaking the law, you can't bitch about getting in trouble. He said they make the speed limits 35 in an area, because they expect people to realistically go about 45, and they don't usually bother with it unless the cop is a dick. And again, he said some guys are assholes.
The only person he had a problem with at the reception was my brother's friend who is a law student at U of I. The cop said he was giving him some shit about not having probable cause and referencing some ruling from 1983. The cop said he didn't care, just go to his room and he wouldn't bother him but the kid just kept referncing this 20+ year old ruling.
Basically if you are cool, and respectful with the cops, they will more than likely reciprocate. Unless you happen to get on the assholes out there. Then you are SOL no matter what.
