Closing this weekend.
Anybody got any good stories from back in the day? Saw my fair share of drunk coeds fall down those nasty ass stairs.

I got thrown out of there once for hanging on the exit sign in the back (the emergency exit) trying to rip it off. Then I tried to fight like 5 bouncers. I think that was on one of those 25 pitchers for $25 nights.
Fun memories in that bar ... it was certainly a shit hole though

I think that place was named Dooley's when I was in school in the mid-80s. If it's the same spot, it (Dooley's) was the very first bar I got in to as a raw frosh. It wasn't too crappy back then, but it was definitely not up to the standards (hot ass) of the Field House or the Airliner. Or Gabe's LOL. NOT.

Agree on the level of hot chics but if you were looking for a slump buster or you didn't want to have to work for it the Jake's dance floor was the place to be.

Jake's was alright. The night before my 25th birthday, me and my buddy got fucking ripped in there and needed to take a cab home at closing time. Well, there was only one cab around bince it was like a Tuesday night or some shit so we had to split with these gals. No one could sit in the front seat bince the cabby was cruising around with his buddy, so we had 4 in the back seat. My buddy has one of the gals sitting on his lap and inappropriately grabbed the gal who was sitting in the middle between us but made it appear to come in from my angle. Gal punches the shit out of me for like 3 minutes and damn near breaks my glasses. Unbeknownst to me, Ma had called and I had one of those prolish phones with no flip top on it and the fucker answered in my pocket so all Ma heard was chicks yelling shit.
Needless to say, I didn't get laid when I got home that night. Then the next night was Fieldhouse night 21 pitchers for $25 bince it was my birthday. Ended up pissing right in the middle of the floor in my bedroom and Ma was on the cusp of fucking murdering me. I rolled down to Flower Rama to try to smooth shit over (even though I really hadn't done anything wrong) but Ma still denied access for about a month after that series of days. Haven't been to Jake's bince then.

When I was a TA, I met 4 dudes from my class at the end of the semester at Jake's. They knew the owner so I paid $10 the entire night and gave the bartender a $20 tip. Got really fucked up and come closing time got to go in the back room/roof top and drink/smoke til about 4am. Not a bad a place.....but any place is good when you get an "in".

The owner, Mike Porter, has an on-going feud with the IC council. He apparently defaulted on a loan to install a sprinkler system in One-Eyed-Jakes. He's now beign denied perhaps a liquor license for The Summit.
Nobody on the IC council is crying much this morning with the closing of One-Eyed-Jakes.
I did drink there as a student (78-82), but for the life of me cannot remember what it would have been called. But it had a great view of the Pentacrest, especially with new snowfall.

Well, the city council will be really happy when 80% of the bars are closed, the area looks like downtown Champaign, and the assessed values of the properties are 1/3 of what they are today. Those big spaces are only conducive to being bars/restaurants, nothing else.

He got pushed into a new location that wasn't as prime - he went partially microbrew and it was decent, but he still sold swill, too. My last semester of LS, I was living in Chi-town bince Ma absolutely HATED IC because she couldn't find decent work there and I only had class on Thursday and Friday. So I would roll in Wednesday night and head straight to Fitzy's where the special was a huge pitcher of swill brew and a dozen wings for $5. You could pretty trashed and full for $20 with tax and tip.

That's why I mentioned Tycoon IC above - Thursday nights were dime draws and/or dollar pitchers. I think the cover was like $2, but still, the whole crew could head out with $5 each for a night of drunkeness and a throbbing headache. Good times, good times...

Yeah, $5 a head back when gas cost a dime a gallon and a carton of milk was a fucking nickel. It ain't 1965 anymore grandpa.

I don't think anybody's going to miss one or two.

I don't think anybody's going to miss one or two. Seth, I agree they won't be missed but the City sure as hell will miss the tax revenue when those one or two turn into 4,5, or 12. I was talking to a good friend of mine who is a commercial Realtor in IC, he said other then a bar/restaurant and or apartments the building owners are going to have a hard time finding people to lease the spaces to that do enough business that could afford the monthly payments needed to pay for the buildings. That isn't going to affect only the bars but every other building in downtown IC. Sorry but name me one fucking person that has any brains at all that would move downtown for a business other then retail? Then tell me what retail business can afford what the bars were paying in rent. Sorry it isn't going to happen. Rents go down, values go down and the IC tax base goes down. Look I don't give a shit if there are 5 bars in downtown IC but the problem is the parking blows, it costs way too much, every parking meter has a one hour max. There is a reason why the U of I now owns have the fucking Old Capitol and the rest of it is filled with what do you know restaurants, T-Shirt shops, and cell phone kiosks.

We used to get blasted at Joe's, George's, Airliner and the Fieldhouse. I was once refused service at George's after a day of drinking at the Airliner. To be fair, I had just hurled in the bathroom. I proceeded to leave George's, take a wrong turn, and walk out of Iowa City. I lived about three blocks (infamous South Johnson) from whore central (aka Ped Mall) and it took me 4 hours to get home. I took a quick nap somewhere on north Dodge too. In December. In the snow. Oh yeah, Jakes: We used to call that place Three Floors of Whores. I refused to go there.

I was a fully functioning alcoholic my third year of law school. I drank every day but Tuesday and Wednesday. I did quite a bit of drinking at Fitzi's too, my brother lived right across the street from it. Lit Mickey's up pretty good too.
