So I am moving into my new place this weekend. The building has a group contract with Comcast for basic and expanded cable to be included in the assessments. I called Comcast today to get the internets and JapanTV set up for Ma. Dude said the address already has "some additional services" and someone whose last name doesn't match the seller is paying for it. In order for me to get service, I will have to schlep my closing documents to Comcast's freaking prole filled offices on North Avenue or in Skokie. I absolutely have to have internet access for my job. Do I roll the dice that when I get there, the internets will be hooked up and just use my current router (that I own) and check out the rest of the situation and perhaps buy my own Tivo box for a DVR and just milk that until Comcast finally shuts me down? Or should I just go to Comcast, stand in line with the proles and make sure I get the services I want? Ma can live without JapanTV, but not internet.

Somebody once told me that cable companies have to physically come out to your house/building to shut down your internet connection, that's why they normally just leave the connection open. Somebody also told me 11 players were getting suspended from the football team, so who knows. I would roll the dice.

So you're saying maybe I should go check it first and see if it works and if it does, enjoy my free interwebs for the next thousand years? I know RCN was able to throttle mine back from blazing fast to slow as mollases with a couple clicks on a keyboard a few years ago.

If you can get into the building prior to your official move-in date, I would definitely check it out to see. I hear you about the speed, though. I have no clue if what I was told is actually true or not.

Dude, do what a prole would do... if you EVER have the opportunity to 'stick it to man', fucking stick that shit. Stick 'em good. Because (as you surely know), a corporation (or lawyer) will fuck a common man every chance THEY get. Fair is fair. Fuck Comcast.

Yeah, but conceivably there is some schmuck who is still getting a bill. And I don't want to roll out there, hook it up and have everything be kosher, then get some shitbomb from work on a Saturday, sit in there and crank away on it and then have Comcast shut me down all of the sudden. Then when I go to call them to report the problem, they'll be all like "eat a bag pal, you aren't our customer."

I got free cable (including HBO!) at the duplex I lived in right after college for 3 years. Mediacom and go screw themselves.
After having DirecTV for 3 years I could never go back to that shitty company and I laugh at the promo mailings I get what seems like everyday from those idiots.

I switched out my Digital box for an HD box with mediacom (free). I hooked it up an now I am getting every channel for free (excluding PPV and porn). All sports channels, all "premium movie channels (HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, etc.)
BTW, I am pro-mediacom. I'm paying about the same as all you dish people for TV and internet as you are paying for TV.

You are paying $55 a month for TV and internet? Doubt it. $70 I could be paying $75 with DirecTV for both if I didn't have the movie channels. our internet is $20 bucks a month not the fucking $50 that we were paying with Mediacom.

FWIW, we have had no problems whatsoever from Mediacom here in the 'M'.
We talked about going with a dish once, but when my folks' tv went out for 4 days last winter when we had a storm and our tv and net was working just fine, we decided to stay with Mediacom.
